Facebook Live Catch Up: Jewish Wedding RoundUp and Wedding Videography Q&A with Adrian Stone from The Dreamcatchers

03/06/2017 by Karen

On Wednesday evening myself and Adrian Stone from The Dreamcatchers had SO much fun when went live for the May episode of our monthly STG show live from my apartment in London!

After covering the essentials of what happened behind the scenes with Smashing The Glass during the month of May, we went straight into a Wedding Videography Q&A and covered everything from how much you should expect to be paying, to different wedding cinematic styles, to what it was like collaborating together at The Savoy, to Adrian’s new ‘Selfie Wed’ product enabling you to film your entire wedding on your iPhone!

It was action-packed, and if you missed it live, you can still catch up by watching the replay above. Adrian was just fantastic and it’s an absolute must-watch if you are considering (or have already booked) a videographer for your upcoming wedding.

Our monthly STG shows air  live on the last Wednesday of every month on the Smashing The Glass Facebook page at 8pm GMT (that’s 3pm EST, 12pm PST, and 9pm in Europe) to coincide with #WeddingWednesday.

Put Wednesday 28 June in your diary for June’s STG Live show — it’s a ‘Best Hebrew Songs for Jewish Weddings’ special with chazan Jonny Mosesson – it’s going to be uh-mazing!

Make sure you like the Smashing The Glass Facebook page to be notified of all future shows.

Such a great time filming tonight’s #facebooklive with @thedreamcatchrs Head to smashingtheglass.com/fb to see the full show! PS Notice those Aperol Spritzes? ?Definitely the drink of choice for FB Lives! ? @nkimadefaria

How to talk to your family about marrying a non-Jewish partner

01/06/2017 by Smashing The Glass

By Sara Gibbs (All images are from the author’s Jew-ish wedding)

I always assumed I would marry a Jewish man. Even though I wasn’t religious, I grew up with a strong sense of culture and belonging. My father was Israeli, my mother, a Habonim alum from north London. While other families celebrated Christmas, I looked forward to feasting on doughnuts, spinning dreidels and eight days of presents (this bears repeating – eight days of presents – what you got on that, Santa?). My September birthday was frequently, and notably, ruined by coinciding with Yom Kippur, and then magically repaired with the breaking of the fast (what better way to break a fast than with birthday cake?). I loved helping to build the sukkah, failing to blow the shofar, searching for the afikoman. I loved my friends at cheder, I loved the songs, and the rituals and the togetherness – the unique warmth of a Jewish family.

I was going to marry a Jewish man, because I wanted a Jewish home. I wanted to have Jewish babies and raise them in a house full of the music of my culture, the foods, the beautiful bickering – anything else was unthinkable.

Love chooses you

The thing about love, though, is that you don’t choose it – it chooses you. At university, I met a Jewish man, a fellow vegetarian and bohemian type, who, on paper, was perfect (and who, to this day, remains one of my closest and most important friends). But for all his convenient Jewishness, true love didn’t choose us.

We parted ways and I moved to London, where, in my very first job, I met an initially very surly IT manager, who was raised at an international school in Saudi Arabia. He was grouchy and didn’t seem to like me at all. And, in return, I didn’t like him one bit (that’ll teach him). But over much political debate, and him coming to the rescue when I managed to kill my poor, overworked laptop, this incredibly kind, startlingly intelligent, warm-hearted man was revealed to me. All grouchiness subsided – I’d read him all wrong. I had accidentally discovered a diamond – one of the last good ones. A man who would cook and clean and support my dreams with unconditional love and unfathomable patience. He wasn’t Jewish – but it didn’t matter. I was in love.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

Get all your burning wedding questions answered in May’s STG Facebook Live Show

30/05/2017 by Karen

Smashing-The-Glass-Adrian-Stone-STG
Hands up who’s booked a wedding videographer? And who’s still undecided? Whatever your position you’re going to LOVE tomorrow’s Facebook Live over on the Smashing The Glass Facebook page as I’m going to be joined by my great friend and STG Vendor — Adrian Stone from The Dreamcatchers!

Adrian has shot over 800 weddings (that’s over 10,000 hours of wedding footage) and has graced the pages of STG over and over again with his amazing films (including my EPIC 24 hours at The Savoy earlier this year!). He has literally seen anything and everything so feel free to ask him (or me!) any wedding questions you may have,

The show will air live from my home to the Smashing The Glass Facebook page tomorrow, Wednesday 31st May at 8pm GMT (that’s 3pm EST, 12pm PST, and 9pm in Europe).

Adrian and I want to answer ALL your burning wedding questions, big or small. In relation to videography you may be wondering:

  • Is it worth hiring a professional videographer for your big day and how do you go about finding the best one for you?
  • What’s the difference between a documentary and a cinematic style?
  • Is it important to choose a videographer that has shot a wedding at your chosen venue before?
  • Why do videographers range so much in price?

Adrian and I are ready to help! Just pop over to the STG Facebook page and submit your question(s) as a comment on this thread and we’ll answer as many of them as we can on the show. If you prefer to submit a question by email in advance you can do that too — just shoot me a message to karen@smashingtheglass.com.

In addition, as I do with all the monthly shows, I’ll be giving you the lowdown on what’s been going on behind the scenes at Smashing The Glass this month and let you in on the latest news and gossip from the world of Jewish weddings!

This is the fifth episode of our exciting monthly Facebook Live show especially for the STG worldwide community. The show airs on the last Wednesday of each month on the Smashing The Glass Facebook page at 8pm GMT to coincide with #WeddingWednesday.

Favorite wedding books… and other stories

03/05/2017 by Karen Cinnamon

Wedding-Books

It goes without saying that blogs and magazines are great sources of wedding inspiration – but sometimes, there’s nothing quite like a good, sturdy book in which to bury yourself for a few sweet hours, or read in little digestible chunks before bed.

We often hear how stressful planning a wedding can be, and that can certainly be true, but it’s also a joy. It’s the one time in your life that you get to be a bride or groom, caught up in all the excitement of planning one incredible day to celebrate your future together.

So, by that logic, we believe everyone who is planning a wedding should have at least one beautiful, informative and helpful coffee table book, or a wonderful story or collection of poetry, that takes pride of place during the whole process.

We, of course, have a few of our own well-thumbed wedding books:

Best-Wedding-Books

Rock My Wedding: Your Day Your Way by our dear friend and absolutely inspirational fellow wedding blogger, Charlotte O’Shea.

We also adore A Practical Wedding by Meg Keene and Style Me Pretty’s gorgeous offering by Abby Larson.

But what else might you find inspiring? We asked our Recommended Vendors which books they would recommend to serve this very noble purpose – and here’s what they said:

Mandee from Mandee Johnson Photography said: “I would recommend Jamie Lee’s Weddiculous. It’s a fun and honest survival guide to wedding planning that acknowledges the bumps, breakdowns and insanity along the way to saying “I do”, while making you laugh.”

Isabel from Wickham House said: “For our couples, I would recommend either the Debrett’s Wedding Handbook – it’s classic, definitive and reliable — or the Wedding Bible by Sarah Haywood.

My favourite book, however, is The Wedding Planner & Organizer by Mindy Weiss. I am a sucker for hand-written notes and ideas, so this is the perfect combination of useful tips and space to plan and create your perfect wedding.”

Facebook Live Catch Up: Best Songs for your Wedding with DJ Knight

29/04/2017 by Karen

On Wednesday evening DJ Knight and I had SO much fun when went live for the April episode of our monthly STG show live from my apartment in London!

This month is was a ‘Wedding Songs’ special and we were bowled over by DJ Knight’s (otherwise known as Kwamà©’s) fantastic recommendations for First Dance Songs, Smashing The Glass songs, Last Dance songs, and everything in between! There were so many good tunes mentioned (and played — DJ Knight brought along his decks!) that we’ve created a playlist below of every song brought up.

There’s a Spotify playlist for you to listen to and import directly, as well as YouTube links of every song. That’s how much we love you – and it’s all below!

The show was absolutely brilliant and if you missed it, you can still catch up by watching the replay above. Kwamà© was just fantastic and it’s an absolute must-watch if you’re still thinking of ideas for your wedding songs!

We had SUCH a great reaction to this that we are going to follow up in June’s STG Live show with a ‘Best Hebrew Songs for Jewish Weddings’ special with chazan Jonny Mosesson – keep your eyes peeled for that one!

Our monthly STG shows air  live on the last Wednesday of every month on the Smashing The Glass Facebook page at 8pm GMT (that’s 3pm EST, 12pm PST, and 9pm in Europe) to coincide with #WeddingWednesday.

Make sure you like the Smashing The Glass Facebook page to be notified of all future shows.
