A Cultural-Fusion Chinese-Jewish (Chewish) Wedding with a Vera Wang Bride at Kew Gardens, London, UK

21/04/2017 by Karen

Jewish-wedding-kew-gardens
There’s something so special about Jew-ish weddings. Each one symbolises not only a relatively rare coming together of cultures, but a totally unique interpretation of what that combination looks like in practice. We have yet to see two Jew-ish weddings that are the same – there’s no blueprint and the couple has total license to imprint their own ideas, personalities and elements of their relationship into the proceedings.

Jackie and Jon’s Chinese-Jewish (Chewish) wedding was a delightful cultural fusion, taking the most meaningful, colourful and exciting traditions from both the bride and the groom’s respective backgrounds and merging them into one heartfelt super-celebration.

Bride, Jackie, stole the show in her red-carpet worthy gown from Vera Wang‘s White Collection, which is an impressive feat in a botanical paradise venue like Kew Gardens.

All the details, including a full stationery suite, created by the talented bride herself, were captured with nothing less than expert skill by the phenomenal York Place Studios. A family business, York Place Studio is a cherished Smashing Supplier and responsible for not only the images in today’s post, but also the divinely emotional wedding video at the bottom of this post (SO worth a watch).

The Smashing family was out in full force at Jackie and Jon’s big day. Sensational Smashing Supplier, Shir, one of the UK’s most sought-after klezmer wedding bands, also made a much-acclaimed appearance, before Creation Show Band also performed a roof-raising set. We have it on good authority that Anna Phoebe’s back-bending dancefloor electric violin solo was also an unmissable experience!

We’ll pass you on to Jackie now who has written up all the exceptionally borrow-able and emotional details of her and Jon’s big day. Enjoy!

How we met

Jackie, the bride: Jon is a management consultant and I’m a designer. We were introduced on a netball court in New York City, when we both lived there six years ago. While I had been there for seven years, Jon was on a work/study program with 300 other Brits for a year. The week Jon left for England for good, coincidentally, my work sent me to London. We then spent a phenomenal amount of money flying across the Atlantic to visit each other for the following eight months, before Jon persuaded me to move over to London.

Facebook Live Catch Up: The Wedding Dress Trends you need to know about for 2017 and 2018

08/04/2017 by Karen

We had so much fun on Thursday when Team STG headed to Knightsbridge in central London to film our latest Facebook Live from the world famous Smashing Supplier, The Wedding Club.

The show, all about the latest wedding dress trends, featured five of the most established and sought after wedding dress designers in the world: Berta Bridal, Zuhair Murad, Carolina Herrera, Georges Hobeika and Naeem Khan.

We were treated to all sorts of breathtaking looks ranging from super-sexy and barely-there on one end of the spectrum, to lavish gowns layered with peplums, sparkles and a ‘modern ballgown’ feel.

We love it when brides take a bit of a chance with colour, and we saw a beautiful range of elegant shades – perfect for fashion-forward brides looking to make a statement.

We also saw some sensational statement capes and overskirts that brilliantly illustrate how you can create two different looks for your chuppah ceremony and party. These drew virtual gasps in the comments boxes with lots of ‘wooooah’s and wow’s. We ADORED all your comments, questions, interaction and shares. Thank you!

If you missed the live show, you can watch the replay above and do tell us: which one’s your favourite?!

Capes, Low Backs, Overskirts (ie a 2 in 1 look), Modern Ballgowns, Peplums, and LOTS of sparkles were the latest trends as seen in our 2017 Wedding Trends Facebook Live Show with the amazing Krishma from @theweddingclub1. Watch the replay over on Facebook.com/smashingtheglass ✨?✨?✨?✨?✨?✨?✨ “It was so lovely to welcome Karen from @smashingtheglass to our Knightsbridge store today for a Facebook live chat. No More “Shoulds” – why there is no right way to have a Jewish wedding

05/04/2017 by Smashing The Glass

No-more-shoulds
By Sara Gibbs

I have a friend; let’s call her Anna. Anna was six months into planning her Jewish wedding to the love of her life when she came around for a bit of emergency wedding therapy.*

*note – I’m in no way qualified to deliver such therapy, but desperate times…

“My mum says we have to have the ceremony at the synagogue,” she explained, “and my aunt wants me to arrange a coach from London to bring all my guests out to the country, my in laws want to invite about a kazillion people I’ve never heard of, my dad says he won’t sit at the same table as my uncle Shlomo unless he apologises for that thing he did back in ’76, my rabbi doesn’t approve of my caterer…”

On she cried about what the demands everybody else was making on her big day. Once she had finished telling me what everybody and their dog wanted (the dog, it turned out, wanted a walk) I asked her a question that caught her off guard:

“And what do *you* want?”

Anna blinked widely at me a couple of times.

“I’ve no idea,” she admitted.

Anna is a smart woman – but she was so overwhelmed by hearing the word “should” day and night, so inundated with everybody else’s two cents that she hadn’t even paused to consider what kind of celebration she and her partner might actually want to celebrate their choice to spend their lives together!

So I’m going to say the words that could have saved Anna a whole lot of stress and heartache:

There is no right way to have a wedding.

No, you didn’t just fall into another wedding stress dream and conjure up that sentence, you really read it; and here’s how you can start to believe it.

Think of all the possibilities

Once you let go of the idea that there’s one set-in-stone type of wedding, and you open yourself up to all of the fabulous, creative opportunities to really showcase the things you love and that make you a couple, there’s no turning back.

Indulge yourself: rummage through this blog; take a daydreaming cruise through the prettiest pages of Pinterest; play around with colour palettes and chuppah ideas and anything your heart desires.

Every time you catch yourself thinking “not for me”, ask yourself “why not?” Why shouldn’t you have the things that make your heart leap? Why should you and your partner deny yourself your ideal day? If the answer is “to please other people”, then read on, because the Church (or, in this case, Synagogue) of Other People is already full of worshippers — you can probably slip out unnoticed — and here’s how.

Karen-Cinnamon-wedding
1. Let go of guilt

I know, I know, we’re Jewish – guilt is part of our DNA and our schtick. But it doesn’t have to be. It’s as easy as deciding not to feel guilty for putting your happiness first on a day that is totally and completely about you.

Before you say anything, I know. It’s not always that easy. Weddings are also about family and tradition. There are people you love who have dreamed of this day going a certain way for a long time. There are traditions that go back millennia and to some, letting go of those traditions, even for a day, might be unthinkable.

Yes, weddings are about family, too, but they’re about you and your partner first.

You cannot sacrifice starting your marriage the way you feel is right for the sake of appeasing others. All you need to start the process is permission to not do that anymore. So here it is: permission. I release you. You’re free. Now here’s how to take back the reins.

Karen-Cinnamon-wedding
2. Decide whose opinion matters and disregard the rest

First and foremost, that would be you and your partner. Your opinions matter the most.

Then, really have a think about who has the right to chip in. Your parents, possibly – but even then, how much of a say do they get? A lot of this will depend on who’s paying, and, if they’re contributing to your wedding, how you accepted that money.

Before my own wedding, my then fiancé and I both carefully discussed our respective parents’ expectations with them before any contributions changed hands.

This isn’t always an easy conversation to have, but it’s an important one to get out of the way right at the beginning. Managing expectations is the best way to avoid conflict and disappointment further down the line.

This doesn’t need to be combative in any way. Simply say: “before we start planning this wedding, it’s important for us to say that it means a lot to us to start our married life with a celebration that represents who we are. This may mean that you won’t always agree with our decisions, but please know that these decisions will make us very, very happy. We’d really love for you to be a part of this journey with us and to help us plan the wedding that means the most to us and the commitment we’re making to each other.”

Facebook Live Catch Up: Bridal Beauty with Philippa Louise

01/04/2017 by Karen

On Wednesday we went live for the March episode of our monthly show especially for the STG worldwide community, and it was SO MUCH FUN!

This month it was a ‘Bridal Beauty’ special and I hosted it alongside my much-loved Smashing Supplier, Philippa Louise and she smashed it! She answered every one of your brilliant questions from the best make up for a hot destination wedding to how best to achieve a look for your big day that is both suitable for photographs but also natural, to what lip colour goes best with your dress — oh yes, and she also told us all about a fantastic eyelash hack!

I also revealed the STG Wedding of the Month, announced the winner of our Savoy competition and also told you all about our amazing private Facebook Group just for Jewish (and Jew-ish!) Brides. If you would like to join, click here!

If you missed it, you can still catch up by watching the replay below. Philippa gave out so much useful advice and there were so many brilliant tips. You all loved her!

Our monthly STG shows air  live on the last Wednesday of every month on the Smashing The Glass Facebook page at 8pm GMT (that’s 3pm EST, 12pm PST, and 9pm in Europe) to coincide with #WeddingWednesday.

Make sure you like the Smashing The Glass Facebook page to be notified of future shows! This month’s show is going out on Wednesday 26th April 2017, and I’ll be joined by one of the best DJ’s and Event Producers in the country, the super cool DJ Knight, (who actually DJ-ed at my Jewish wedding!) for a ‘Wedding Entertainment Q&A’ live show.

More details nearer the time… Happy Weekend everyone!

Which Jewish celebrity wedding would you have loved to have been a guest at?

29/03/2017 by Karen Cinnamon

Famous-Jewish-Weddings
Everyone LOVES a celebrity wedding — the lavish details, the glamorous guest list — and everybody LOVES a Jewish wedding for the atmosphere, the food and, of course, the dancing! So you can only imagine how people feel about Jewish celebrity weddings (hint, it’s very positive), and our fabulous Smashing Suppliers are no exception!

We asked the STG family which Jewish weddings they wish they could have attended, and, unsurprisingly, they had quite a bit to say.

sachabaroncohenislafisherwedding
Sacha Baron Cohen & Isla Fisher’s Wedding

Yael from Made in Israel Events said: “Everyone has a dark secret, I think it’s time I reveal mine. Since I was nine years old, and to this day, I have loved watching the daily Australian soap ‘Home and Away’. I follow all the latest news on the show’s stars and watch all the episodes online. The characters keep changing, but the plot pretty much remains the same. What can I do? I’m addicted!

One of the most beautiful Home and Away stars back in the ’90s was Isla Fisher. When I heard she married Sacha Baron Cohen, I truly was happy that the Jewish people are now gaining some Aussie glam. I definitely would have loved to have seen those two tying the knot and smashing the glass.”

Madeleine Barton from The Savoy said “Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher are both amazing at what they do and it was a very small, intimate wedding just for friends and family, so rather than showing off their huge celebrity status they had the wedding exactly how they both had envisaged it.

Isla was also quoted as saying “I will definitely have a Jewish wedding just to be with Sacha. I would do anything — move into any religion — to be united in marriage with him. We have a future together, and religion comes second to love as far as we are concerned.” I think this shows the power of love over everything else in this world which I think is especially important in the world we currently live in.”

Debbie from Qube Events said “I embrace quirkiness and I am sure that Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher’s wedding was full of it.  Any chance to be creative and unique is right up our street!”

Anne-hathaway-adam-shulman-wedding
Anne Hathaway & Adam Shulman’s Wedding

Bruce Russell from The Savoy said “I have long been a fan of Anne Hathaway  since before “The Devil Wears Prada”, and love her sense of style and elegance… a modern day Grace Kelly – so I woul have loved to have been present at her wedding to Adam Shulman.

Their wedding (from what we saw online) combined both their faiths and pictures a true fairytale of love, romance and celebrating with their family and friends. To me that’s what it’s all about!”
