Pop Art Jewish wedding full of creative surprises, at The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, USA

06/10/2015 by Karen

Creative-Jewish-Wedding
“Just because the wedding industry encourages conformity, you don’t have to comply. Do it your way!”

Top advice from this morning’s bride, Melody, and yes she did! This is a wedding EXTRAVAGANZA. Seriously — I’ve never seen anything like it and the truth is, I don’t even know where to begin. Perhaps I should start by saying that I think this is one of my favourite weddings EVER to appear on Smashing The Glass and having blogged over 150 super cool real Jewish weddings I don’t say that lightly.

I love that the chuppah was created by the bride and features multi-coloured pom poms and green grass. I love that Melody walked down the aisle to a mash-up of Forever Young and Canon in D. I love that the bride and groom both wore custom Converse with ‘Let Love Win” embroidered down the side. I love that instead of the usual sit-down dinner, guests were treated to a ‘pop-up’ restaurant, where they had to make a reservation and come back for their table. I love that the bridesmaids wore flower ‘bib’ necklaces (yes Melody made that a thing!). And I love that the wedding theme was inspired by the artist Frida Kahlo and her vibrant colour palate. You see… anything can inspire your wedding theme, literally anything! Think outside of the box, and as far as your mind can take you.

There is also a a drag queen performing as Beyoncà© AND a flash mob of kids ‘interrupting’ the first dance. You have to see it to believe it (check it all out in the highlights video at the end by the super talented Rodinis Films).

Oh and gummy bears are loosely woven into this the big day too.

The whole shebang was documented by photography geniuses, Chrisman Studios. Every time I feature one of their weddings I know it’s going to be a memorable post, but this one is an absolute corker. It’s clear that Melody and Michael invested so much time and effort into making their wedding uniquely them and I can’t wait a moment longer to show it to you.

Come on then… let’s take a look. Over to Melody, today’s awesome bride.

how we met

Melody, the Bride: We met through Mellow Mushroom (a national pizza franchise in the USA). Michael is a multi-unit franchisee, and my father is one of the founders of the company. My dad introduced us, he thought we would make a good match. We fell in love over pizza!

Katie & Jason | super cool Jewish wedding at The Chapel, San Francisco, USA

08/09/2015 by Karen

Jewish-wedding-San-Francisco
A Jewish wedding in a chapel? Er… YES! You’ll probably know by now that nothing Jewish-wedding-related is off limits on Smashing The Glass (in fact, the more unusual, the better!) and it’s true, today’s Jewish wedding took place in a breathtaking setting that was once a chapel. It’s now a music venue and the bride and groom’s chuppah ceremony graced the stage where the bands usually play, whilst the guests watched on with glasses of wine in their hands.

Everything about this wedding is the epitome of the STG mantra of having the wedding you want, your way. It’s a super creative fun-filled W day — one of those where you will need to come back time and time again to view the images just to make sure you didn’t miss any of the achingly cool details.

Katie and Jason are insanely, crazily, and meant-to-be-together-forever in love. It screams out from the incredible imagery by STG-faves Chrisman Studios — and it screams out of their wedding report too (they wrote it together…).

Happy Tuesday folks.

a non-traditional Jewish wedding venue

Katie and Jason, the Bride and Groom: We picked the venue because we wanted something non-traditional. It was in our neighbourhood and we loved the idea of an urban, city wedding. The Chapel is a fun music venue, and we viewed our day as an opportunity to celebrate and party with all of our closest friends and family.

Maggie & Jeff | New York City-infused ‘Urban Elegance’ Jew-ish wedding at the Dumbo Loft, Brooklyn, New York City, USA

14/08/2015 by Karen

New-York-City-Wedding
Maggie and Jeff seem like one cool couple so it goes without saying that their wedding is a super chic affair with an urban Brooklyn edge. It’s full to bursting with stunning details — just check out the gold-foiled wedding hashtag on the napkins for starters — and I LOVE the minimal yet industrial styling . It’s understated yet oh so elegant.

But as stylish as it is, tradition and family are at the heart of this affair… Jeff’s  parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were all married in Brooklyn so having their wedding at The Dumbo Loft was the perfect way to keep the tradition alive. Not only that, but Jeff’s family kiddush cup that’s been used for all their family events since the 1800’s, was used for the blessings in their wedding ceremony too.

I don’t think I’ve seen and featured such awesome pre-ceremony images either… what an epic way to spend the morning with your bridal party! (scroll down to the bottom of the post to see what I’m talking about).

More super cool NYC-flavour (literally) touches include the ultimate Brooklyn BBQ buffet, and an incredible wedding cake from Momofuku — an NYC establishment which also happens to be one of Jeff’s favourite sweet treat places.

The gorgeous set of images, as crisp and cool as the big day itself, are by Britty D. Photography.

how we met

Maggie, the Bride: We first met in our junior year in college during a business class. The class was called Emerging Economies and we took a week trip to South Korea. On the trip, we became good friends, kept in touch over the summer and shortly, after returning to school in August, we began dating…the rest is history!

Ava & Josh | Super-glam Art Deco inspired Jewish wedding at 501 Union, Brooklyn, New York City, USA

20/07/2015 by Karen

Gold-confetti-wedding
Sometimes New Yorkers just reach a level of perfection mere mortals can only imagine. This is one of those instances. Ava and Josh married in the 501 Union space in Brooklyn and theirs is an Art Deco-inspired day, serving the associated glamour, luxury and exuberance in spades. It’s stylish and polished beyond belief, yet family and their own union remains as the focal point throughout.

As an event producer, it was no surprise that the Ava, the bride, decided to orchestrate the entire day herself. In her own words, Ava ‘liked the idea of balancing organic, lush greenery and florals with fancy champagne towers and glamour golds’ — Let’s face it, this is not a run of the mill bride here — this lady knows her stuff.

And of course Ava was spot on – the organic and the glitz do work spectacularly together — diametrically opposed but so complementary. Have a look at the family style dinner amidst glamorous palms and champagne towers. The simple chuppah (incorporating her father’s tallit) and the beautiful hanging florals in the ceremony room and then, in the evening, guests partied under a gold ticker tape/snow globe effect on the dance floor.

In fact, I’m going to have to track down one of those industrial gold confetti machines, I’m not sure I can celebrate my next birthday without it. How did I not know they existed?!

While I’m at it, I might have to pinch Ava and Josh’s leaving gift ideas too — bagged coffee, late night snacks and Berocca. How super cool is that!

Ava and Josh found their photographer by browsing various wedding blogs — that’s why I love STG — I get a chance to showcase the works of the most amazing photographers and you have the opportunity to reach out and snap them up for yourselves!

Check out Kelly Kollar Photography’s photos below – and remember Ava and Josh are a very discerning couple! gold confetti weddinggold confetti wedding

Jamie & John | Garden loft Jewish wedding with an amazing suspended floral chuppah at Open Secret Studios, Illinois, Chicago, USA

14/07/2015 by Karen

Jewish-wedding Chicago
Jamie and John’s big day is swoon-inducingly pretty. I love every single creative element — from the incredible suspended flower-covered chuppah, to the “best woman” dog wearing a custom satin harness made by the groom’s mum, to the illustrated invitations, programs, menus and place cards, all painstakingly hand-sketched and painted by the bride herself!

It’s just all so exquisite with so much creative input from both the bride and groom.

And the flowers just take my breath away. I expect muchos pinning action to be happening this morning – I for one will be pinning my heart out!

In a slight deviation from the norm, the narration of this W-Day comes directly from Becca Heuer, Jamie and John’s super talented wedding photographer who as it happens is getting married herself in a couple of months! Becca, take it away…
