Real Jewish Brides: Jos on her original wedding date

02/09/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Jos will be marrying Daniel in March 2021 at Hackney Town Hall, London, UK. Click here to read all Jos’ planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: (1) Before meeting Daniel, Jos was known for her torrid dating tales – so much so that her friends used to call her Bridget Jonestein! (2) Daniel proposed to Jos in the Greek island of Naxos! (3) Jos is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

In another life, the 27th June 2020 would have played out very differently. The plan had been crafted months ago. Firstly, me, my bridesmaids, my mum, aunt, sisters in law, cousins, and grandma would decamp to one of my favourite London haunts: Pivonie Nail spa in Belsize village. Having been a regular there since they opened, myself and my girls Aya and Lily (they’re the best) had already decided that Fairy Tailor by Essie would be the colour of my wedding nails.

I had pretty much intended on booking it out so that every female I hold dear could be pampered before our wedding. In the evening, I’d asked for as many of my bridesmaids as we’re comfortable to come and hang out at my parents, my bestie Taylor and I already decided which side of the double bed on the top floor of my parent’s house we’d be sleeping on the night before I got married. I’m fairly sure I requested a movie to watch, probably something like Pitch Perfect, nothing wedding themed to be honest.

Real Jewish Brides: Alexandra on New Hobbies

19/08/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Alexandra will be marrying Ian in May 2021 at La Corte Dei Messapi in Ostuni, Puglia, Italy. Click here to read all Alexandra’s planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: THREE FACTS: (1) Alexandra and Ian are planning an intimate black-tie destination wedding for 60 of their nearest and dearest in Puglia, Italy. (2) Alexandra is Jewish, and Ian is in the process of converting to Judaism. (3) Alexandra is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

I am a person who was constantly on the move when things were open. There is nothing I love more than running from a movie to a museum to dinner. Just spending the day sitting in my apartment made me nervous to think about, let alone do. I did not like ever being tied down to a space, and when the quarantine began, I was honestly terrified. How was I going to spend all of my time indoors!?

So I did what I usually do — I began to research. But instead of looking for something to do out in the city, I was looking for what to do in my home. During this period, I also had to come to grips with the lack of control I now felt with the pandemic and moving the wedding. I needed to take control of the things I could.

CHARLOTTE AND ADAM
The Wedding Buzz

The Wedding Buzz, we all know the feeling: the excitement we get from the moment we say yes to looking at your first wedding magazine, creating a Pinterest board, showing off our new ring, waking up every day knowing you’re one day closer to marrying your person – and then something we cannot control comes along as it’s gone. As if the Buzz was never there and you’re left with a heavy feeling, a feeling of ifs and maybes and you just can’t budge it.

I know from talking to other brides, both those who have have already postponed or like me, have planned for 2021 and haven’t had to postpone yet, that the loss of the Wedding Buzz is real. Oddly, it’s been a comfort to know that other brides feel it too. It’s strange to think you’re pleased other people have also lost the Wedding Buzz but nice to know you’re not over reacting or being over dramatic.

COVID-19 and wedding planning

The past 8 weeks have not been very eventful. As far as the pandemic goes, living between two states proves interesting when one state is still on lockdown and the other is fully open. Thankfully, I now live in the fully open state, so this has allowed me to find a job after getting laid off due to COVID-19. As a hotel manager my industry was hardest hit by this pandemic and after being laid off in March, my fiancé and I had to really consider what was happening with our wedding planning without my income. Fortunately, it only took 4 months for me to get a job making what I was before, so the budget of our wedding can stay the same.

Planning our wedding, though, has been very upsetting and neither of us really are excited to do it anymore. We have the big stuff planned like venue, photographer, videographer, florist, and wedding invitations, but we are struggling to talk to other vendors because of the impersonal interactions we’re having due to limitations on person to person meetings. An example of this: we cannot decide on a caterer due to not being able to try their food.

We have also run into another problem: vendors that are traditionally booked closer to the wedding date are now sending us emails saying that they are booking up around our date because of so many people rescheduling their weddings. This is causing the planner in me so much added stress that I do not even want to look into this stuff yet, let alone start booking.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

Real Jewish Brides: Orli on the Upside of Postponement

22/07/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Orli will be marrying Ben on 30th May 2021 at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, UK. Click here to read all Orli’s planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: (1) Orli and Ben met on Jswipe. (2) Although their venue, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, couldn’t be more quintessentially London, Orli and Ben are going for a countryside feel. (3) Orli is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

2020 the year of our wedding. At least that was what we had thought…

Looking back to the beginning of the year, I had imagined exactly how the year was going to pan out. I knew when I had to do each task with wedding planning and how every aspect of our wedding would look. Never could I have imagined that it would not be going ahead due to a pandemic.

Everyone kept saying to us was that it would be fine, it was totally unprecedented, there was nothing we could do but wait, and have we’d have nothing to worry about because September would be absolutely fine. So, that’s exactly what we did. We patiently waited and then we waited a little longer. The more we waited the more we realised the importance of what we wanted out of our wedding and how we wanted to be surrounded by the people closest to us and not having any restrictions on who we could hug.
