A Saint Bridal Bride for a Romantically Rustic Outdoor Jewish Wedding Weekend at Jardines De Alfabia, Mallorca, Spain

18/11/2024 by Karen Cinnamon

Get ready for a truly fabulous Jewish wedding! UK couple Katie, a yoga teacher, and Tom, who works in recruitment, held their big day at Mallorca’s beautiful Jardines De Alfabia, and it was positively overflowing with Spanish charm, vibrant colors, and, above all, tons of Jewish joy.

The couple worked with their planner, Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Elegante by Michelle J, to plan an unforgettable wedding weekend in Mallorca with their nearest and dearest, including a Friday night welcome party and a day of lounging by the pool Saturday prior to the main event. In Katie’s words, Michelle was “absolutely amazing – none of it would have been possible without her.”

We’re obsessed with the stunning floral chuppah, Katie’s gorgeous boho lace dress by Saint Bridal, and the duo’s wonderful wedding stationery, featuring an illustration of the venue (complete with the couple’s dog on the steps) by Anna Jayne Designs, and designed and printed by Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Bigday Designs.

Photographer Violeta Minnick and videographer Soul Weddings captured the day so beautifully – read on for all the details in Katie’s own words…

Family Drama During Jewish Wedding Planning? 5 Common Scenarios and How to Deal With Them

26/06/2024 by Karen Cinnamon

This is a guest post by Michelle Jacobs. The founder of Elegante by Michelle J, Michelle  is a wedding planner with a niche specialisation in luxury destination weddings in Europe  for UK and US based Jewish couples. Her mission is to create magical and memorable weddings for her couples, their families and their guests. Michelle has had the privilege of working at numerous European venues and has built fantastic relationships and effective collaborations with a whole host of talented and professional wedding vendors. She is passionate about sharing all of her knowledge and experience to create your dream wedding.

Working towards a wedding of any kind has its stressors, but when planning a Jewish wedding it is common for one or both sets of parents to be heavily involved – a practice I have affectionately called ‘planning by committee’. While this has a lot of positives, from time to time we do come across difficult situations – family politics and differing viewpoints can cause ‘family drama’ during wedding planning. Part of my job as a wedding planner is to help my couples navigate these scenarios, and this blog is to give you some (hopefully!) sage advice based on my experience.

Below I outline 5 common scenarios and how I advise you best deal with them, but first I want to give you some general advice. Within the wedding industry there is a lot of talk about ‘doing your wedding, your way’, often with the implication that this should be absolute and at all costs. However, I recommend that you remain pragmatic and understand the bigger picture. Sometimes this means compromising on an issue where parents may be advocating strongly for something that differs to your vision, which may give you leverage to get your way on other issues.

Negotiation is key, particularly in situations where parents are paying all or the lion’s share of the bill. If you are paying for your wedding yourselves, you generally have more autonomy and say over the details – with all due respect to your parents, of course.

Guest Lists

The seemingly simple question of who to invite can be a source of family drama during wedding planning. Something I see often is that couples want a more intimate wedding with a guest list of people they know and who have meaning to them, and their parents would like to invite an extensive list of extended family, their own friends, acquaintances and business associates. In reality, the first thing to remember is that your venue will likely dictate the capacity for your wedding anyway – helpful to keep in mind when faced with this predicament!

At weddings for which parents are paying and use this as a reason to insist on inviting their own guests, we urge couples to have a gentle but honest conversation with them. You can say something along the lines of: ‘We really only want people at our wedding who we know, and who mean something to us. Can we respectfully request of you that we leave anyone we don’t know or doesn’t play a part in our lives off the list?’.

It can also help to suggest organising a separate event in the weeks leading up to the wedding, to which your parents can invite and entertain anyone they like. This might help with their feelings of obligation and inclusion, and keep all parties happy!

Kosher Catering

I talk a lot with my couples about the question of whether or not their wedding catering should (or has to be) kosher. We start with a couple of thinking points: Do you personally want kosher food, and how important is it to you? Will any of your guests be offended if the catering is not kosher? Finally, will your rabbi insist on it being kosher?

If you would prefer not to have kosher catering but your parents are insisting on it, this can be a source of family drama. I advise you to carefully consider how important an issue this might be to anyone you are very close to, and whether you can accommodate anyone who may be offended by providing separate, sealed kosher meals for them. Explain rationally to your parents why you don’t want it, and consider making a compromise such as a ‘kosher friendly’ or ‘non offensive menu’ – fish and vegetarian, no ham or shellfish and so on.

I go into a great deal more detail about this issue in a blog focused on destination wedding kosher catering.

Budget

One thing that has always and will always be a potential bone of contention during wedding planning is budget. My headline piece of advice here is to be prepared to have open, clear and up-front conversations so there is no confusion.

There is often much negotiation about who is contributing what, and apprehension about approaching parents to find out. Often when I first speak with my couples they don’t have a clear idea of their budget because they haven’t yet had The Chat with both sides of the family. You really just have to bite the bullet and have an open conversation about your vision, and who is paying what.

You also need to consider whether your vision matches your budget. I help my couples with this by giving examples of what we can achieve at different price points, to manage expectations and provide a realistic starting point.

I have also come across weddings in the past where one set of parents would like to pay for certain things, for example the flowers, and say that they will therefore organise these separately. While this sounds like a lovely idea that saves you some planning energy, I strongly advise not letting this happen. It only results in an unclear plan for your wedding, an element of the day your wedding planner has no oversight on, and a disparate finished product. Everything should be planned cohesively, and we find other ways of allowing parents to pay for different elements – a disparate approach doesn’t work in 2024!

An Elie Saab Bride For a Tuscan Jewish Wedding Full of Love, Lemons, and Local Charm at the Great Synagogue of Florence and Villa Maiano, Tuscany, Italy

12/02/2024 by Karen Cinnamon

Aviva and Alan, Villa di Maiano, Fiesole, Italy

There’s nothing like a Tuscan wedding – and Aviva and Alan’s is one for the books! These two went all out in embracing the local color and charm of their oh-so-scenic environs, from the majestic Grand Synagogue of Florence where the chuppah took place to the dreamy reception at Villa di Maiano, nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany.

Planning a destination wedding abroad is no easy feat, and Aviva and Alan wisely chose to work with planner extraordinaire Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Elegante by Michelle J to make their dream Jewish wedding weekend a reality.

Michelle brought in a team of nine coordinators who all worked to ensure that the couple and their guests were incredibly well looked after, not only on the wedding day but throughout the wonderful pre- and post-wedding events Aviva and Alan hosted for everyone.

Michelle also worked with the couple’s florist, Il Giardino delle Fate Flower Design, to style every space in a unique and beautiful way – don’t miss it all in the wonderful images by David Bastianoni!

Now over to the bride…

Venue

Aviva, the bride: We married at the beautiful Florence Synagogue where we hosted a pre-ceremony reception in the gardens, tisch in the synagogue entrance hall and a stunning ceremony with a small orchestra in the synagogue itself.

Following the ceremony, our planner had arranged transportation to drive all of our guests to Villa di Maiano, which is in a small town called Fiesole, about 15 minutes’ drive away and in the hills just above Florence. The venue is in a beautiful setting with spectacular views of the city and the surrounding countryside.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

A Lihi Hod Bride for an Enchanted Garden Jewish Wedding at Villa Orlando, Torre del Lago, Tuscany, Italy

02/01/2024 by Karen Cinnamon

Natasha-and-Marc-Villa-Orlando-Torre-del-Lago-in-Tuscany-Italy

Today we’re thrilled to be sharing our first Jewish wedding of 2024, and is it ever a stunner! UK couple Natasha and Marc had the most exquisite lakeside Tuscan Jewish wedding, and we are OBSESSED.

To plan the day of their dreams abroad, the couple opted to work with Michelle Jacobs of Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Elegante by Michelle J, and she brought their vision of an enchanted candlelit garden wedding to life – including introducing them to their fabulous venue, Villa Orlando, and sorting everything from generators to furniture and beyond to transform the outdoor spaces.

We love the couple’s on-the-day stationery from Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Bigday Designs, and we can’t get enough of the elegant white and green color scheme – and that floral chuppah! Don’t miss it in the wonderful photos by James Mason and video by Whites Film.

There’s so much more to say about this very special day, but we’ll leave it to the bride – who looked ever so chic in her gown by Israeli designer Lihi Hod – to fill you in on the rest…

A Wedding in Tuscany

Natasha, the bride: Our venue was Villa Orlando which is in Torre del Lago in Tuscany, Italy.  I always wanted to get married overlooking a lake/water and our wedding planner took us on our venue search trip to Italy.

I knew it was the one immediately.  It’s a privately owned villa on the edge of the lake.  Our guests all stayed about 20 minutes away in Viareggio which is one of Tuscany’s coastal resorts and we held our welcome party in a beach club .

We kept the venue a secret and arranged coaches to bring all our guests to the wedding.

Our wedding venue was the Orlando family’s private home and we had access to all of the outdoor spaces; we could not have done it without a wedding planner as everything had to be brought in, including generators,  toilets,  kitchen equipment, furniture and all of the sound and lighting.

We also had a marquee on hold in case of rain, though thankfully we did not need it.

We used different areas of the property for each part of our wedding –  so the chuppah was in front of the villa, by the lake, the aperito was by the boat house and the wedding dinner was at the side of the villa. It was an unusual space and it took a lot of discussion to agree how it was going to work including where to place the stage, dance floor and the bar.  It ended up being quite an unusal layout with our top table at the side of the dance floor,  but it worked really well.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

A Berta Bride for an Enchanted Garden Jewish Wedding at the Fairmont Windsor Park, UK

23/10/2023 by Karen Cinnamon

Bianca-Jordan-Fairmont-Hotel-Windsor-Park-UK

It’s been a long couple of weeks for the Jewish people. In light of Hamas’s horrific acts of terrorism, we’ve taken a few weeks off from our usual wedding content to focus on supporting Israel and each other. While we sadly can’t say things have gotten to a better place, we are feeling more than ever that we need all the Jewish joy we can get – and that includes weddings.

Hence our decision to resume publishing the joyous, life-affirming celebrations of love that are the core of what we do here at Smashing The Glass. And we’re back today with something really special: Bianca and Jordan’s beautiful Jewish wedding at The Fairmont Hotel in Windsor, just outside London – made possibly by a fabulous team of #STGvendors.

Bianca and Jordan turned to Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Michelle Jacobs of Elegante by Michelle J to make their enchanted garden dreams a reality. Michelle planned Bianca’s sister’s wedding a few years back, so the couple knew from the beginning they were working with the best of the best. In Bianca’s words, “She was amazing and really helped guide us through the process and really understood our vision and what was important to us… Any concerns we had Michelle would deal with it for us and we knew we were in the best hands.” You can see for yourself how exquisitely it all came together in the wonderful photos by Paul Santos and the moving trailer by Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Denee Motion.

Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Big Day Designs crafted Bianca and Jordan’s invitations, featuring rose gold foiling and wax seals, as well as their wedding day stationery, and Bianca found her stunner of a gown at Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor The Wedding Club in Knightsbridge. She chose a strapless corset A-line dress by the Israeli designer Berta – which is all the more meaningful in light of the current situation.

Do read on for more Jewish joy, in Bianca’s own words…
