Real Jewish Brides – Mel: Top Tips for a Jewish Wedding… and my wedding is this Sunday!

13/03/2018 by Karen Cinnamon

Mel  will be marrying Mitch this Sunday 18 March 2018, in a Jewish wedding at Warren Weir at Luton Hoo, UK.

THREE FACTS: (1) Mel and Mitch met online on JDate (2) Their Jewish wedding will be classy and traditional with plenty of modern touches  (3) Mel is a member of Smashing The Glass’s private members club VIB Club. Not yet a member? Come join us here!

The final countdown

As I write this it is two weeks until the big day. 2 weeks! 73 weeks ago we got engaged and now there’s just a fortnight until I’m married. Cannot. Believe. It.

Everyone said to me when we set the date that time would go quickly. It was well over a year away so felt like plenty of time. They were right. Time has disappeared. Brides — cherish your planning time; it will be over in a flash.

How am I feeling?

For the last few months everyone has asked me the same question; “Not long now until the big day. How are you feeling?”

I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve been asked this. And every time I say the same thing; I get flutters of excitement, anticipation, nerves and fear. It hasn’t quite dawned on me yet that I’m getting married. I’m not sure when it will feel real — I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

A Carolina Herrera Bride for a Super Elegant Jewish Wedding at Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire, UK

12/03/2018 by Karen

Jewish wedding Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire, UK_0066

Oh my goodness, this is one elegant Jewish wedding. Lauren who works in public relations, and Ross, a chartered surveyor, wanted the day to reflect all the best elements of a classic English wedding with a contemporary twist.

The couple chose Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Jenna Keller as their wedding planner (who is offering an exclusive 10% discount to all our VIB Club members!) and she helped them bring their super glam vision to life at Capesthorne Hall, a beautiful stately home in Cheshire.

We just love a floral chuppah, and Jenna came up with just the chicest variation! Lauren wanted something unique but not over-the-top, and the refined white floral canopy atop translucent poles set against the all-white marquee fits the bill exactly. It’s contemporary while embracing tradition, sophisticated and refined, just like the rest of this wedding.

To make their ceremony even more special, Lauren and Ross booked much-loved STG Recommended Vendor Boutique Chupah Music, adding to the emotional and intimate atmosphere.

Planner Jenna pointed the pair toward their wonderful photographer, Robert Shack. He did an amazing job of capturing their glamorous day, and videographer Rebecca Reville caught the festivities in live action.

Speaking of things that are glamorous, isn’t Lauren’s lace gown exquisite? It fits her like a glove, and that train! She found her Carolina Herrera stunner at yet another fabulous STG Recommended Vendor The Wedding Club in London–but she almost missed out on the dress of her dreams. At the end of a long day of shopping, Lauren was ready to call it quits after having found solid gown options at the first three of four appointments she had scheduled.

Her mum encouraged her not to cancel that final appointment, though, and luckily Lauren listened, because the very first dress her Wedding Club stylist brought out for her turned out to be the one. This goes to show that it’s always worth taking the time to check out that one last shop (or venue, or any vendor really), because you just never know where you’ll find the one! Now over to the bride herself . . .

How we met

Lauren, the bride: We first met at Habonim Dror Winter Camp in 2007 when we were both camp leaders. I remember getting on so well; however nothing romantic happened at the time!

We met again in 2011 at Birmingham City University. We were both in the same halls and decided to join forces for drinks one night during freshers’ week. We have been together ever since!Continue ReadingContinue Reading

A Bride in a Green Reformation Dress for a Laid-Back Jewish Wedding on the Beach with a Modern Egalitarian Ceremony in Caesarea, Israel

09/03/2018 by Karen

Jewish wedding Israel beachfront_0062
Cool Wedding Alert! Hannah, an urban planner who hails from Melbourne, Australia, and Eitan, a contractor and Tel Aviv native, told their wedding planner and designer, Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Bebke, that they wanted their Jewish wedding to feel like the best day at the beach you’ve ever had.

And Bebke really, really delivered. Their day, in a stunning beach venue just north of Caesaria, is truly the ultimate chilled-out seaside bash.

Ever felt like the standard formal event doesn’t quite mesh with your sensibilities? Hannah and Eitan did, and they opted to skip out on the sit-down meal and instead make their day a constant stream of food, drinks, and dancing. We love how they opted to have all different kinds of food stations, from deli to wood-fired pizza to fish shawarma! Way to keep all your guests happy.

Another thing we adore about this wedding is the ultra-personal alternative Jewish ceremony Hannah and Eitan crafted, combining tradition with their egalitarian values. They wrote their own ketubah, had their siblings read not only the traditional seven blessings but also blessings they wrote themselves for the couple, and exchanged rings with each other.

Hannah looked radiant in her green Reformation dress, proving that you don’t have to wear white to capture that bridal elegance.

Photographer Alexey Kudrik came recommended by planner Bebke, and we’re in love with his elegant documentary style. These photos look like they’ve been snatched from a super cool editorial, but at the same time Alexey could not have captured the emotion of the day more exquisitely–just take a look at the photos of Hannah and Eitan under the chuppah. We’ll leave it to Hannah to fill you in on the rest.

How we met

Hannah, the bride: We met through a mutual friend when I was in Tel Aviv visiting for another friend’s wedding in 2015 – we ended up in the same group of people hanging out on the beach one weekend – and what started as a holiday fling ended in marriage, and now a baby on the way!

The Ultimate Balancing Act: Motherhood and Work

08/03/2018 by Karen

Juggling-Motherhood-with-Business
My two worlds — image by John Nassari

Today is International Women’s Day and it seems the perfect moment to write a personal post that I’ve been wanting to compose for a very long time:

One of my favourite vendors here at Smashing The Glass is the photographer John Nassari. He has taken some of the most beautiful wedding photographs I’ve ever seen but he has other strings to his photography bow. His latest project is ‘Alters’, a series of images which, with some clever editing, explores different aspects of an individual’s personality.

When John asked me if I would be willing to sit for him I was delighted but I couldn’t think what my alter ego might be or how my personality might be split. And then I realised that as a working mother, I exist almost all the time in two separate headspaces, always navigating two different worlds, divided between my family and business.

This is what John captured in his portrait. Here I am, on one hand a businesswoman: smartly dressed, high heels, make up, ready to take on the world with my independence and ideas. On the other hand, I’m a mother: dressed for practicalities, juggling the demands of two small people who are completely dependent on me.

But John’s captured something else.

Work Me is facing towards Family Me and smiling, while, simultaneously, my body is turned away from them, angled towards the window and the world outside. It’s like I’m in constant conflict with myself, twisting in every direction to keep all the plates spinning at once.

I began my business on maternity leave, a way of keeping my brain ticking while I was looking after a baby and I developed it to fit around family life. I wanted the two aspects of my life to sit happily alongside each other but, in reality, it is so easy to get sucked into one thing or the other. The trick is juggling the two.

Today is International Women’s Day and right now is an interesting time to be a woman: the Harvey Weinstein scandal, ♯Me Too, ♯Time’s Up, equal pay discussions at the BBC, the centenary of (some) women winning the right to vote. This is a big moment for the possibility of gender equality, a time of evaluation and change. And yet, I can’t help thinking the concept of juggling childcare and work is still mainly an issue for women rather more than it is for men.

My husband is a brilliant hands-on dad but does he consider himself to be juggling the different parts of his life? I’m not so sure. When men choose a job or a career, how often do they consider whether it will fit in around family life? How many choose to work from home or part-time so that they can pick the kids up from school, or stay with them when they’re sick, or just spend some time with them each day?

I’m not saying men don’t do all these things. I’m just wondering how many factor it into their life choices. Here at Smashing The Glass we speak to lots of couples who think really hard about gender equality in their marriage ceremony, tinker with the traditions of our very own patriarchal religion to bring the proceedings up to date. But I wonder how many of us take that sensibility through to what, for many, is the next rite of passage — having children.

The truth is, I’m not two separate people. I am not Family Me and Work Me. I’m not the sum of two elements but many. And those elements are mixed up and blurred and fuzzy at the edges. The most challenging aspect of juggling motherhood and work is actually the lack of separation between the two.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

A Liz Martinez Bride for a Summer Chic Jewish Wedding with an Epic Dance Party in Marbella, Spain

07/03/2018 by Karen

Destination Jewish wedding Villa Padierna Palace LOV Olivia Valere Marbella Spain_0039
Wow wow wow. This duo is just beyond… Stunning couple Claudia, who works in recruitment, and Nick, who works for Diageo, had the most exquisite outdoor summer destination Jewish wedding. The London-based pair opted to wed in sunny Marbella, Spain, and with guests coming in from every continent but Antarctica, the pair made a weekend of their celebration, with a full calendar of activities–including a henna party!

Claudia and Nick found the ultimate romantic setting for their chuppah in Villa Padierna Palace. Calling this breathtaking spot a hotel doesn’t do it justice; the place looks like a Tuscan palace that’s been airdropped in to the Costa del Sol.

Following the emotional ceremony, the pair threw an epic all-night dance party at one of Marbella’s top nightclubs, LOV Olivia Valere. Their guests were totally on board, dancing into the morning–with a break for the gorgeous sparkler-studded cake the couple arranged to have brought out at 1 a.m. to keep everyone going.

Bride Claudia said when she and Nick walked down the aisle with everyone clapping, she felt like she was at a celebrity wedding–and that’s exactly the vibe we got from this fab celebration. Claudia really did look like a movie star in her dreamy Liz Martinez gown, and photographer Barney Walters and videographer Gione Da Silva captured the day in all its glamor. Now over to the gorgeous Claudia!

How we met

Claudia, the bride: We met at university, where we both studied French and were in the same project group, but we didn’t get together until we both lived in France almost 2 years later. We visited each other a few times and finally started dating. Three days later Nick met Claudia’s entire enormous family at her 21st birthday party in Paris and he got the seal of approval! We have now been together for 6 years!
