“My best Jewish wedding photo” by Chiko Photography

11/10/2015 by Karen

A weekly series where  I ask some of the world’s best wedding photographers to pick out their favourite shot from their Jewish wedding portfolio. This week it’s the turn of  Chiko Ashkenazi    from Chiko Photography.

‘Winter Wonderland’ by  Chiko

Taken in London — a city that is never usually peaceful or quiet… yet at 1am on a Sunday night I was given  the opportunity to capture a classic and timeless wedding photo. It could have been taken directly out of a Hollywood film set. It’s romantic and pure and there is something very powerful in capturing a moment like this.

Few feelings in life compare to those you get when you see a fresh, untouched snowfall. The sight is stunning, the landscape peaceful and the feeling is sublime — all contribute to  making  a great setting on a wedding day.”

“My best Jewish wedding photo” by Adam and Hannah Photography

27/09/2015 by Karen

A weekly series where  I ask some of the world’s best wedding photographers to pick out their favourite shot from their Jewish wedding portfolio. This week it’s the turn of Adam and Hannah from  Adam and Hannah Photography  (and mazal tov to them both – they’ve just become parents to an  adorable  baby daughter!)

‘Contentment’ by  Adam and Hannah

I think it is impossible to pick one single photo out as the very best, or as our absolute favourite. Each photo comes with a whole story  of the  couple, their personalities, the day leading up to it  and  everything that came together for that  precise moment. But for me and Hannah I think there  is one  category of photographs that we love, perhaps more than others. We love the photos where we have managed to capture the split second where the bride and groom look at  each other, usually under the chuppah or in the badeken  room, and smile (or sometimes  well-up a little bit).

I think that this photo really demonstrates it,  Nicole looking at Josh  under the chuppah with utter contentment. What I really love about this photo, and others like it, is that the bride and groom  probably won’t even remember it happening. They will remember the  glass being smashed at the end of the ceremony, they will remember being thrown up on chairs during the dancing and the other ‘big’ moments, but  sneaking a quick glance at each other under the chuppah is something that will probably only come back to them when they see the photo. It’s one of the  reasons we love the job we do!”

“My best Jewish wedding photo” by Liron Erel

‘Chuppah’ by  Liron Erel

My chosen  image might be a bit unorthodox as it’s from a Messianic-Jewish wedding I shot in May,in Nataf, a little village close to Jerusalem.

In the moment captured, the bride is circling the groom having just reached the chuppah, with a sensational view as a backdrop to the ceremony. There was a crazy heat wave during the day of  42ËšC  (107.6ËšF), but everyone was so energised — just look at their faces — that it didn’t bother anyone…

‘Bride and bridesmaids’ by Richmond Pictures

A captured fleeting moment, this to me is a reportage moment that I come back to time and again as a favourite photograph. The fast pace and anticipation is palpable as the bride and bridesmaids spy on the guests and get ready to make their entrance. To me it is everything good reportage images should be – totally unplanned, imperfect and unrepeatable, so a true depiction of the energy and emotion before the ceremony begins.

“My best Jewish wedding photo” by Herschel Gutman

‘In love’ by Herschel Gutman

Given the task by Karen to submit my best wedding photo was a very daunting one. I am very bad at selecting 250 photos from a single wedding – so selecting one from tens of thousands of photos was a massive challenge. Usually, the more I stare at my images, the less I like them. So many things come into my head, from composition, to the lighting, to the contrast, to the clarity – all the technicalities of a good photo. But there is another factor that for me, overrides everything that one was ever taught during photography school and that is something that you can’t be taught, “how does this photo make you feel”. If it resonates with you, if it makes you laugh, if it makes you smile, if it makes you cry – then its a great photo.

Nikki and Gavriel’s wedding was a truly phenomenal wedding. It took place on a Moshav in Israel and I could not have asked for a more in love and happy couple. They were uber cool and just being around them was an absolute buzz. The photo I selected is one of many of them dancing. When I look at this photo – I find myself staring at it, it makes me smile on the inside and out. . I just love it. I love the way they are holding one another, the way Nikki is looking at Gavriel, the way Gavriel has his eyes closed, just taking in this moment with his wife. There is a backlight which adds to the atmosphere of this photo and the hanging lights in the background give this photo some contrast and depth.

Thanks for the task Karen – you really made me question my style and my photographs – THANK YOU!
