A Groundbreaking Same-Sex Orthodox Jewish Wedding with Tons of Personal Touches at Rochdale Town Hall, UK

We have a really special Jewish wedding to share with you today! London couple Jay, who runs a scientific consultancy business, and Michael, a chartered accountant working in risk management, were the first same-sex couple to be married by an Orthodox rabbi in the UK, and we are here for it!

It’s so exciting to see the rise of same-sex Orthodox Jewish weddings, and we loved hearing about how Jay and Michael crafted their entirely bespoke halachic ceremony. When the pair were planning their wedding, they joined our Brides Club (yes, guys can join too!), and we’re so thrilled to hear how much they valued our own Karen Cinnamon’s advice throughout the process.  

Jay and Michael’s wedding was absolutely chock full of wonderful personal touches. For starters, inspired by their shared love of musical theatre, Jay and Michael commissioned a wedding booklet designed to replicate the Playbill programs distributed in Broadway theatres, featuring illustrations of the couple in their wedding attire, a “cast list,” and a five-act synopsis of their love story. And we love that Jay and Michael chose a ten-piece band (accompanied by a chuppah singer) from Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor The Twentysomethings for their entertainment. The couple loved working with the band, and they couldn’t get enough of the Israeli dancing set. Also, how awesome is it that their first dance was to Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis in Yiddish, sung by one of the pair’s best women, accompanied by the band?!

How We Met

We met thanks to the “shadchan of the 21st century”, the dating app Hinge.

Our early romance was complicated by geography, as Jay was dividing his time between London, Vienna and Jerusalem. Our first date took place at Tuk Tuk in London, but despite the initial spark, the practical challenges made us doubt that the relationship would develop further. An unexpected encounter at Hendon Central tube station set the relationship back on track and we both took this as a sign not to give up.

Because we could all use some extra Jewish joy today, we’re bringing you the truly fabulous NYC Jewish wedding of Emily and Max at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers! The New York couple loves their home city, and their venue’s perfect mix of city vibe with gorgeous views, plenty of space, and full-service facilities ticked all their boxes.

Featuring a color palette of warm, summery sunset colors, a stunner of a floral chuppah, and a gorgeous laser-cut ketubah from Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Ketubah.com, this wedding was really something special. Photographer Joseph Lin portrayed the day in his signature easygoing, natural style, and Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Kiss The Bride Films captured all the joy and magic of this wonderful wedding on video.

We also love all the personal details Emily and Max worked in to make their day one-of-a-kind – from luggage tag escort cards embossed with the New York City skyline and the couple’s names and wedding date to fun welcome bags stuffed with some of the duo’s local favorites.

How We Met

Emily, the bride: I met Max on Bumble in the summer of 2020 during a brief Covid lull!

Here is our full story from our wedding website:

Emily and Max met on Bumble in the summer of 2020, a match made in pandemic heaven. Their connection was instant, despite the limitations of virtual dating. They spent hours texting, getting to know each other like old friends.

Their first date was a spontaneous adventure in Fort Greene Park, where Max showed up with a bag of beer and Emily arrived in workout clothes after crossing the Williamsburg Bridge. Despite being woefully unprepared for a first date, they hit it off immediately, chatting late into the night like they’d known each other for years.

As the pandemic intensified, they became each other’s “pod,” inseparable quarantine companions. Max quickly realized Emily had seen every episode of Law and Order (and could recite it all), and Emily shockingly found herself slowly becoming a Yankees fan.

Emily’s remote teaching gig led Max to offer his parents’ NYC apartment as her home office, a gesture that cemented their bond. They were practically living together, albeit in different boroughs, and their love grew stronger with each passing day.

Once restrictions were lifted, they embarked on international adventures, traveling to Greece and St. Lucia, renewing their shared love for exploration. They attended weddings and got to know each other’s families, their relationship blossoming in the face of new experiences.

In 2022, they took the plunge, moving into Max’s apartment together. They settled into a rhythm – Emily cooking, Max cleaning dishes, Emily baking, Max cleaning the Kitchen-aid (the pattern is clear, right?). Between hosting Halloween parties and birthday festivities for friends and family, they began to make Max’s house their home.

And then in June of 2023, amidst a summer of travel, Max popped the question in the middle of Vanderbilt’s campus in Nashville. For the first time ever, Emily was without words (but not without tears) as she joyfully accepted Max’s beautiful proposal.

They celebrated with champagne, more happy tears (mostly from Emily) and full hearts as the thrill of spending their lives together set in. While the last few months of being fiancées have flown by, Max and Emily cannot wait to celebrate their love with their closest friends and family in NYC.

If you could use an extra infusion of Jewish joy right now, look no further – we promise you the Jewish wedding of Judith, a senior manager at an IT consultancy, and Josh, a teacher at a secondary school, will put a BIG smile on your face.

We’re in love with all of the personal DIY touches the couple incorporated into their big day to make it 100%, totally them. We can’t get enough of the fun DIY activity sessions Judith and Josh set up for their guests, featuring everything from a giant Guess Who game with members of the wedding party as all the faces to an art station where guests could decorate mini canvases! Don’t miss them in the wonderful photos by Natalie and Max.

Another thing we love is that when it came to music, the duo opted to invite friends to do guest DJ sets all through the wedding with the theme of “music through the ages” – how fun is that?!

This was a wedding with lots of moving parts to be organized, and Judith and Josh wisely opted to work with Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Events by Natasha as their on-the-day coordinator to make sure everything ran smoothly. In Judith’s words, “Natasha and her team were absolutely fantastic on the day – they prepared everything so beautifully, and were really instrumental in making things run smoothly and to time. It really allowed us to just “press play” on the day and see all the hard work being put into motion, without us having to worry about anything.”

How We Met

Judith, the bride: We met as many modern couples do, using the help of the handy dating app Hinge! Josh was drawn in by the colourful rainbow makeup and unitard displayed on Judith’s profile (evidence of one of the many themed zoom hang-outs Judith had with her dance troupe over lockdown), and Judith was impressed by video footage of Josh scaling the boulder at Mabley Green, showing his climbing prowess and shared interest in bouldering.

We met for dinner and a drink at a local Japanese bar, and enjoyed each others’ company over some tasty sushi. The conversation flowed, and the smiles and laughs kept coming. It was Chanukah, and towards the end of the date, Josh asked whether Judith had been lighting candles to celebrate. Much to her surprise, he reached into his bag and produced a full Chanukiah, set of candles, and a lighter. Together, in the middle of the bar, we smiled across at one another in the candlelight. There’s not much that’s better than discovering a hidden gem of a Jewish wedding venue right in the center of London – which is exactly what today’s couple, Smashing The Glass Brides Club member Kitty and Sam, found in Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Middle Temple.

As soon as the couple set eyes on Middle Temple – located in the City of London, just a stone’s throw from the couple’s chuppah venue, Bevis Marks Synagogue – they knew it was just the place for their reception. With a striking (and spacious!) hall full of history and the kind of verdant outdoor space you’d hardly expect to find in the heart of the city, Middle Temple is really something special – and Kitty can’t say enough kind words about the experience of working with their events team in the leadup to the big day! A Pronovias Bride for a Picture Perfect Jewish COVID Wedding at Larz Anderson House, Washington DC, USA

Merav and Dmitri’s Jewish wedding was SO incredibly dreamy, if not for the personalized masks and “vaccine” shooters we’d never have guessed it took place during the pandemic.

We’re obsessed with their gorgeous venue, Larz Anderson House in downtown Washington, DC – a spot the couple had looked at and loved when they first started planning, but eventually rejected because it couldn’t accommodate their pre-COVID guest list.

Once the pandemic hit and they had to scale things down, though, the Anderson House became a viable option. We’re not sure which we love more, the lush garden where Merav and Dmitri held their outdoor chuppah or the beautiful ballroom they used for their reception. We’re also in love with Merav and Dimitri’s fabulous ketubah by Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Ink with Intent. The couple searched long and hard for a ketubah that felt truly them, and when they stumbled onto one of Ink with Intent’s past ketubot featuring text printed over a picture of the couple, they knew that was the direction for them. Needless to say, the pair adore their ketubah, and it now graces a wall in their home as a special piece of art.

How we met

Merav, the bride: Dmitri and I originally met in 2008 through a mutual friend, but we didn’t know each other well and only saw each other sparingly over the years. When he moved down to Washington, DC to start a data analytics company, we reconnected over coffee and we started working together to make the dream a reality.

Together, we worked at WeWork Chinatown (where we did our pre-wedding photo shoot!), 7 days a week, through holidays and snowstorms to build our company. Today, we have 40 employees and a growing business.

As our respect and trust for each other grew, so did our relationship. A year and a half after working together, we started dating. After 4 years of growing our company together, moving in, and adopting two cats, Dmitri proposed at a private dinner on a beautiful beach in Mexico.Continue ReadingContinue Reading
