Sarah & Nick | Uber cool and intimate ‘Red’ Jewish wedding at Forman’s Smoked Salmon Fish Factory, Olympic Park, London, UK

04/11/2014 by Karen

super-cool-London-wedding
One, two, three and breathe Karen…

That’s what I said to myself when Smashing The Glass reader, Sarah’s à¼ber cool London wedding to Nick dropped into my inbox, so impressed was I by their unusual venue (a smoked salmon factory in London’s Olympic Park !), their teenage sweetheart love story, and their choice of wedding transport through the streets of London. Oh yes, these two traveled from synagogue to reception in a red convertible Mustang!

And you’ve got to hand it to a bride that rocks a leather biker jacket and Ray-Bans over her Pronovias dress…

I also love the fact that Sarah and Nick invited just their very closest friends and family, and that they found their chazan (cantor), Jonny Mosesson, via the blog’s Smashing Suppliers recommended vendor list. Jonny is one of the most talented people I know and to think that this blog is able to connect brides with the industry’s very best makes me a very happy bunny indeed.

But back to Sarah and Nick — thank you for submitting your beautiful wedding and thank you to Reportage By for capturing it so wonderfully. Here’s the whole story in Sarah’s words.

HOW WE MET
Sarah, the Bride: Nick and I met at school aged 11. We were always friends but nothing ever happened whilst we were studying together. We stayed in touch when we left at 16 but he and his family were in Miami and I was in LA. We went on a ‘catch up’ date when we were both back in London when we were 19, and my mum even said, you will marry Nick. She has always had a sixth sense…

Gena & Tony | Extraordinarily imaginative ‘color explosion’ Jewish wedding at the Sydney Polo Club, NSW, Australia

10/07/2014 by Karen

rainbow-wedding
Epic.

Get your sunglasses ready because todays wedding is a massive rainbow-hued color fest. Gena and her husband Tony had one of those weddings where there are so many details I love I hardly even know where to start.

There’s Gena’s pom pom crown, her crochet dress and her supersize bouquet filled with flowers of every possible hue, glitter, ribbons, and pom poms. Then we’ve got bridesmaids dressed in orange carrying big foil heart shaped balloons with tissue paper tassels instead of bouquets. There’s a super cute dog taking centre stage during the ceremony. And 1200 odd colored ribbons used to decorate the barn and chairs. The handmade resin crayons for buttonholes (a reference to the green crayon hair clip that Gena wore in her hair the night Tony first noticed her) are so cute!). And then there’s the way that Tony looks at Gena…

So have you got your sunglasses ready? Well get your Pinterest boards primed too because you are most certainly going to need them! All of these delectable images were taken by the rather brilliant Lara Hotz. (Oh and check out the mighty cute wedding film at the end of the post by The White Tree too!).

A RUSTIC VENUE
Our wedding was on a farm at the Sydney Polo Club, about an hour away from where we live. We wanted to have something a bit out of the ordinary (this can be hard with a big Jewish wedding but we knew we didn’t want a hotel reception room) and not expect people to have to travel too far. We ended up having the chuppah and dance floor inside the barn and connected a marquee to the side where the guests were seated. The barn doors slid open to connect the two spaces.

Missy & Yoni | Super cool and colourful South East London Jew-ish wedding at Asylum Arts and The Big Red Pizza Bus

01/07/2014 by Karen

South-London-Wedding
When I first looked through these Jew-ish wedding images submitted by the legendary Laura Babb I was doing a little happy dance over every detail…

Smashing a piñata instead of a glass? SQUEAL!  Derelict crumbling chapel for a Jew-ish ceremony venue? HOLY MOLY!  Vivienne Westwood glittery red shoes? HOT DAMN! A colourful mariachi band ? WHOA! A DJ outfit called the Wedding Smashers WOW! I mean this wedding is just begging to be blogged on Smashing the Glass!

Aside from being an amazing day full of fun, laughter, heart and joy, and apart from being documented by the outrageously talented (read major photographer crush) Laura Babb, one of the things that I love most about this wedding is that the couple tried their hardest to source everything from local suppliers in their area of South East London.

Tslil & Maor | Super cool fancy dress Jewish wedding at Bikta Bayar, Carmel Forest, Israel

28/05/2014 by Karen

Fancy-Dress-Wedding
This morning  lovelies we’re jetting off to the land of milk and honey  for Tslil and Maor’s riotous  Purim inspired fancy dress affair. For those that don’t know,  Purim is a jolly  carnival-like Jewish holiday marked by parades and costume parties involving  everyone  dressing up to the max in masks and fancy dress outfits.

So any wedding that happens around Purim soaks up some of this  merriment, and obviously that means extra drinking, extra fun, and of course, lots of dressing up!  With Tslil and Maor’s  entertaining fancy dress theme and a great wedding  mindset (read their advice to others at the bottom of the piece to see what I mean) they  created an effortlessly cool wedding with a very warm  vibe. Yes, the two CAN go together.

You also need to know that  Tslil wore  not one but TWO sensational  dresses! What’s more she designed them both herself!  How immense is that?

Check out this joyous  day for yourselves that was captured in all its glory  by  Barak Aharon.  And if you love couple shots in the wilds of nature then you are in for a treat!

VENUE
We got married in Bikta B’Yaar in a place called Beit Oren near Haifa. We wanted a location surrounded by nature, but because the wedding was scheduled for winter we had to go with the inside option. Even though winter in Israel is known to have its warm days, we didn’t want to take a chance and planned an indoor event right from the beginning.

Erica & Jared | Breathtaking Lower East Side Jewish winter wedding at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, New York City

06/05/2014 by Karen

Jewish wedding at the Angel Orensanz Foundation New York City 46
The majority of submissions that land in my inbox are from photographers, which is wonderful as I get to sample all the most creative and inspiring new photography and Jewish weddings out there. However there is something very special about receiving an excitable email from a recently married couple, bursting to tell me all about their big day (especially when they’ve drawn inspiration from Smashing The Glass in the run-up to their wedding!). I recently got an email just like this from Erica all about her sensational Lower East Side W-day, and it was only made better by the fact that this venue has to be one of the most jaw-dropping I’ve ever seen.

Some say that there is something theatrical about a wedding… well if that’s the case, today’s venue is the perfect stage. It’s the phenomenal Angel Orensanz, the oldest surviving synagogue in New York City. With a Beethoven inspired atmosphere, some scintillating kaleidoscopic creations by the lighting designers, lots of Jewish traditions, and  Brett Matthews‘ immense photography, your eyes are in for a treat with this New York knockout!

VENUE
Erica, the Bride: I heard about this Smashing The Glass through endless searching of the internet for inspiration for Jewish weddings. I didn’t want a cookie-cutter wedding and wanted as much individuality as possible, which is how I came across the blog.

We chose to get married at The Angel Orensanz Foundation, and decided upon this venue because of its beautiful architecture and deep-rooted Jewish history (it was built in 1849 and is the oldest surviving synagogue in New York City). The first time I saw the space, I was sold. It didn’t hurt that Sarah Jessica Parker got married there and often frequents the space. I love aesthetically satisfying spaces with culture and tradition. The juxtaposition of the gothic/cathedral look and the modernity of the art space they hold on the third floor seemed really exciting to me and I knew that the photos would last me a lifetime.
