“My best Jewish wedding photo” by Michael Temchine

15/11/2015 by Karen

A weekly series where  I ask some of the world’s best wedding photographers to pick out their favourite shot from their Jewish wedding portfolio. This week it’s the turn of  Michael Temchine.

‘Eyes’ by  Michael Temchine

Picking a favourite photo out of the tens of thousands that I have taken is not a simple task. On any given day it will likely change. But I always come back to this photo taken under the chuppah at Sarah and Meir’s wedding. It simply grabs you and holds you.

Like many orthodox, or frum, weddings the chuppah was packed with people and moving around was difficult at best. Finding an angle that would put Sarah and Meir’s faces both in the frame was nigh impossible. Being able to find those fleeting moments that tell the story and have them composed in a way that supported the meaning of the moment was like winning the lottery. It took a lot of small adjustments to get everything right on my end as I prayed Sarah would give him that little look.

I simply love that all of the elements in this photo return you to those eyes. It is simple, direct, and the perfect moment.“

‘Tribeca Rooftop’ by STAK  photography

This photo is from Emily and Jon’s wedding at Tribeca Rooftop. They spent a large part of their relationship doing long distance, so I wanted a photograph that symbolised how the wedding day was here and brought them together again.  So in this photo, I was able to see the couple and get a reflection of their venue, Tribeca Rooftop, all into the same shot.  I love the way Jon is holding her, and how Emily is reaching back grabbing his hands. The connection is real, and you can feel it in the photo.”

‘Joy’ by  onelove photography

This was taken in 2012, and I still come back to it. From the start, Ali and Andy are a couple that have this sparky, excitable energy between the them. Playful and sarcastic, laughing constantly. Their wedding was one for the books, a really stunner of a location at Nestldown in Northern California. However, everything about their wedding was about JOY. So much joy was shared, the families were relaxed and beaming with happiness, and they even had an 80’s cover band for their reception entertainment. This moment, captured right after they were pronounced as married, encapsulates their energy and their essence together.”

‘The groom’s speech’ by Claudine Hartzel

Choosing my best Jewish wedding photo was such a hard decision..  I have lots of amazing dancing shots and chuppah shots so I wanted to find an image that meant a lot to me and summed up what a Jewish wedding means to me.

Jewish weddings are about family and friends, and of course there is the dancing and food! BUT what I really enjoy  is the emotion and the happiness of all the guests.

As a photographer  it’s such a privilege to be under the chuppah so close to the bride and groom making their vows to each other. But I do also love the speeches  when everybody can see you and hear you…

I  have always loved this photograph as the groom is giving the most enthralling  speech to a sea of guests.”

‘Beach portrait’ by  Dror Einav

So why is this  my favourite? First of all I love this couple, Jordan  & Jacob were easygoing throughout  the day and they totally  trusted my photography skills. I normally avoid dramatically  posed photos, but this time it was different…

During their portrait shoot I saw these  two concrete blocks near the beach and I asked them to go and stand in front of them.  The wind blew  and moved Jordan’s  dress, and the sunset lit  them beautifully. The way they both stood  and looked at me with their serious facial  expressions together with the contrast between the blocks and the landscape.

For me, in this one photo, all the elements combined together perfectly.”
