My interview with top UK Wedding Bridal Hair Stylist, Ondine Cowley

29/03/2014 by Karen

Ondine Cowley wedding hair 6Whenever I receive an  email from a bride-to-be asking me if I can recommend a hair stylist for her  wedding day,  I always have just one answer: the wonderful Ondine Cowley, who offers a full suite of wedding day hair styling services all stamped with her trademark artistic  British  flair.

She’s styled the hair of  Kate Beckinsale, Courtney Love, Kevin Spacey, Jenson Button,  Royals and BAFTA  award winners, and  I’m delighted to be interviewing her today as part of my Wedding Smashers series.

Ondine tells us about how she worked her way up at  Nicky Clarke  from apprentice to Style Director, lets us in on 2014’s essential bridal hair trends and shares some valuable snippets of business advice.

So Ondine, what’s the ‘Ondine Cowley’ story? How did you get into hair styling, and what’s happened between then and now?

I’ve always known what I’ve wanted to do since the age of 11. I  used to spend my weekends watching a particular hairdresser style hair near to where I  lived and I was totally fascinated by the transformations.

I got a weekend job when I  was 13 at Toni & Guy and one day  my father said to me “Ondine, if you really want to take this seriously you need to train at the best salon”. He was right of course  so once I’d completed  my GCSE’s  I applied for a position as an apprentice at Nicky Clarke  and  14 years later I’m still there! I trained for 3 ½ years and have  worked my way up to Style Director where I specialise in wedding hair.

I realised quite early on that i had a passion for ‘hair-ups’ and weddings. Nicky himself is incredible at sculpting hair as was a stylist called Jo who is no longer with us. I learnt my artistic skills from them both.

Chuppah GroveContinuing with ‘The Wedding Smashers‘ series where I interview some of the best in the business, today I’m delighted to be talking to  STG favourite, Mary Jane Vaughan,  all about getting the most out of your wedding flowers as well as what it takes to run a successful floristry business.

Who is the Mary Jane Vaughan bride? What is her style and aesthetic?

Our brides vary hugely, so this is a really tough one. I would say that they all share a love of flowers and that the flowers that they choose for their wedding are truly important to them. Our style is romantic, timeless and elegant so it is traditionally brides who share these values that seek us out. Our style of floristry appeals to them. She’s a bride who loves simple, unfussy designs and candle light.

My interview with Louise Beukes, wedding blogger and top UK wedding stylist

02/11/2013 by Karen

Continuing with ‘The Wedding Smashers‘ series where I interview some of the best in the business, today I’m delighted to be talking to Louise Beukes, one of the UK’s top wedding stylists and bloggers.

I was introduced to Louise when I first started blogging weddings, and Kate from Perfect Details wrote a guest post for Smashing The Glass mentioning Louise and her inspirational blog, b.loved weddings.

I immediately started following Louise on Twitter and we connected over all the social media spheres. She’s one of a handful of wedding experts who keep me up to date on all the latest trends, news, and W-day design themes, and I’m forever inspired by her innovative projects and creative prowess.

So let’s meet the lovely Louise!

So Louise, what’s the ‘Louise Beukes’ story? How did you start your company and what’s happened between then and now?

The b.loved story began in March 2011, a month after my own wedding. After working for 10 years as an interior designer I loved the pretty aspects of planning my wedding, and was still reading 100’s of wedding blogs daily! I was approached by a blogger to feature my wedding, two weeks later my own blog was up and running ready to share our wedding story and to inspire other brides. I quickly discovered my niche in providing contemporary inspiration in a world of vintage weddings! Since then, b.loved has grown massively, with the b.team – a panel of wedding experts – joining the line up to share their experience and talents with our readers, and adding a wedding design & styling business to the brand.

How do you unearth inspiration and a create a theme for a couple who have no idea what their creative vision for their day is?

The first part of my process is getting to know the couple. We’ll meet up over drinks for a chat and I’ll ask lots of questions about them and their relationship. Simple things like where you like, what brand of clothing you wear, and where you go on holiday reveal so much about your personality — and I use this information to determine what I call their wedding ‘ brand’.

Can you tell us about the process of starting b.loved?

I didn’t think about it too much! For someone who usually makes very considered choices, it was a bit of a leap-before-you-look decision. After two weeks of late nights, the blog was up and running. I’ve never looked back!
