We love a Chanukah wedding, and Ella and Aaron’s is one of the best we’ve seen! Their vision for their winter Jewish wedding was “twinkly winter wonderland with lots of doughnuts, latkes and joy,” and they worked with the most talented team – including a number of beloved Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendors – to bring it to life.
Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Uptown Events planned the day to perfection, recommending vendors – including the couple’s stunning venue, Micklefield Hall, after their original location fell through – and making sure everything ran smoothly on the day. They also guided Ella and Aaron to choose a DJ Live act when it came to entertainment – and Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor The Twentysomethings ended up being “such a hit that they’ve since become the unofficial band for our whole group, with two other couples booking them since!”
Ella and Aaron made all the stationery themselves (with their small business It IS Personal) – including the most adorable dreidel-shaped reserved seating signs and matchbox place cards in honor of Chanukah. Also perfectly on theme? The duo’s wedding menu, which included latkes, a full salt beef bar, and savoury pulled beef doughnuts (in addition to the sweet kind). Don’t miss all the fabulous details in the exquisite photos by Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor Claudine Hartzel, who captured all the emotion and joy of the day so beautifully.
Another Smashing The Glass Recommended Vendor, Carmel Designs, painted the couple’s wonderful custom ketubah, merging their vision for a design in keeping with their rustic wedding vibes, incorporating the Tree of Life and reflecting Ella and Aaron’s love of animals.

How We Met
Ella, the bride: We met the way so many modern couples do these days – on good old Hinge! We first met in June 2022, when Aaron was finishing his teacher training year, and Ella was working at her local synagogue. Aaron is now Pastoral and Wellbeing Manager at his old Jewish secondary school, and Ella works as Children and Family Educator at the synagogue we’ve joined together, while training to be a therapist. Our professions are an example of how well our values align – something we were both aware of when we met, and is one of the many reasons we instantly clicked and fell for each other so quickly! Not even a month into dating, we’d booked our first holiday to Israel together for Chanukah that year.
Venue
Finding the perfect venue took us quite a long time – we booked one venue about 18 months before our wedding that ended up not working out, so 9 months before the wedding we were beginning to panic! Then, we found Micklefield Hall – truly our dream venue, and everything slotted into place. We walked into the most stunning barn, which honestly was exactly the kind of venue we’d pictured ourselves getting married in. We had a vision of twinkly fairy lights in a rustic winter wonderland, and we knew Micklefield was the perfect place to make this come true! When we got closer to the dance floor, the test song they put on happened to be our first dance song, so it really felt like fate! Aaron’s parents had been to a summer wedding there, and spoke so highly of it, however getting married in the middle of winter presents it’s own challenges! Any worries we had were quickly resolved by the absolutely amazing team at Micklefield – who answered all our many questions (some even before we’d asked them!), and clearly showed us they would look after our guests whatever the weather – and even promised to escort them with umbrellas if needed! Thankfully, we were blessed with a beautiful clear, blue skies winter day, no umbrellas were needed, but the Micklefield staff still went above and beyond in everything. Even before our wedding, we’d recommended the beautiful venue to friends of ours, and we can’t wait to see our friends Natalie and Aron get married there next year!

Theme
Anyone who’s visited our house would have assumed our colour scheme would have been lots and lots of pink! But for our wedding, we decided to mix it up, and a beautiful dark green felt like the perfect winter backdrop. There was lots of green everywhere – the stunning dark green satin bridesmaid dresses, both of our Mums wore complementary dark green beaded dresses, and all the napkins, flowers, stationery and so on was green. Aaron wore a dark green velvet jacket for the Chuppah and photos, and changed into a green waistcoat from Israeli dancing onwards. Ella wanted to have some green on her too, so Aaron’s dad, Laurence Ian, who is a jeweller, added a beautiful emerald onto the necklace Ella was wearing – which Ella’s mum, Janine, also wore on her wedding day, and had belonged to Ella’s Great Grandma – Ella’s Grandma, Panni, managed to keep it safe during the Holocaust and when she escaped communist Hungary. So, in summary, lots and lots of beautiful wintery dark green! Chanukah has always been a very special time of year for us; we went on our first holiday together, to Israel, during Chanukah 2022, and we moved into our first home together and hosted family and friends for the first time during Chanukah 2023, so a Chanukah wedding just felt right! It was really important for us to incorporate the festival into our day. Our vision from the start was a ‘twinkly winter wonderland’ with lots of doughnuts, latkes and joy! There were fairy lights in all the trees, fairy lights lining the barn where our Chuppah and dinner and dancing were, and a firepit to have marshmallows, hot chocolate and more doughnuts for those who stayed to the very end! We were so grateful that our guests had chosen to spend their first night of Chanukah with us, and we wanted to make sure they all felt very involved in the Chanukah lighting. We asked some of our closest friends and family to lend us their Chanukiahs, so that each of our 16 tables could have a Chanukiah on it to light with us.
By coincidence, we both had our Bnei’ Mitzvahs organised by Uptown Events, so, when it came to finding a wedding planner, we both knew exactly where to go. Chloe, Issy, Lucille & Bert were an incredible team – answering our many questions and giving us loads of advice. They found Micklefield for us when we felt like we had gone back to square one, and were excellent in recommending and co-ordinating our vendors to ensure a smooth and extremely organised day. On the day, they made sure everything and everyone was in the right place at the right time, they executed everything to perfection and kept the whole day flowing smoothly.

Invitation/Stationery
All the stationery at our wedding, from invites to place names to welcome signs and everything in between, we made ourselves (with our small business It IS Personal). It was a labour of love – very stressful at times, but completely worth it on the day when we got to see all our hard work come together, and when we got to hear so much love from our guests about everything we made.
Our favourite thing that we made was our escort cards. Something really important to us for our wedding was making sure everyone there felt like more than just a guest, and really felt like part of our day. For our escort cards, we decided to write each of our guests a personalised ‘love letter’, telling them how much they mean to us and sharing special memories we have with them all.
For our place names, we made each guest a matchbox, with their name on one side and ‘The Perfect Match – Mr & Mrs Conway 14.12.25’ on the other side. We love a pun and this one felt very Chanukah appropriate!
Some of the other things we made ourselves were a giant crossword about our love story for guests to do during the reception, dreidel shaped reserved seating signs, wedding newspapers, a ‘table talker’ for each table with the running order, menu and a personalised message to the table, drink stirrers (including one of our cat saying ‘I do too’!), ‘when we were…’ with photos of us at the age of the table number, welcome signs and all the other smaller signage, signature cocktail signs, stickers for hot chocolate cups and doughnut bags for the end of the night, and ‘Let’s Get Lit… You’re Next’ candles for our guests who were engaged.
We’re so proud of everything we made, it was amazing to see all our hard work DIY-ing come to life, and pay off tenfold! We got absolutely beautiful messages from our friends and family after the wedding, and we are so happy that they could feel not just all the hard work, but also feel the love we have for all the people around us. Ella has just finished making a ‘wedding magazine’ for us, made up of photos of all our cards and screenshots of all the gorgeous messages we got – so we can look through them all and remember all the love forever.

Hair + Makeup
I am so lucky that Aaron’s sister, Shera (Styled by Shera) – whose own wedding also featured on STG – is a hairdresser, and I couldn’t picture anyone else doing my hair on our big day! I completely trust her with my hair – I wanted it half up half down, so I could show off the beautiful earrings Aaron got me while still feeling like me with my hair down, and I left the rest to her! I absolutely loved my hair on the day, and it was even more special that my sister-in-law is the one who did it.
Before our engagement party in July 2024, Shera (Styled by Shera) recommended to me a makeup artist who she has being using for almost 10 years – Georgia (Makeup with Georgia). I again didn’t have much of a specific vision with my makeup, I sat down in Georgia’s chair and said I trusted her – and wow she did an amazing job!!
Not a single curl had budged by the end of the night, and my makeup had not smudged either, even through lots and lots of dancing, and being thrown up and down on an Israeli flag!!! Georgia and Shera together truly made me feel like a princess.
The rest of our dream team was made up of Jasmine (Beauty by Jasmine) and Sarah-Louise (Hair by Slo). Everyone looked – and felt – absolutely stunning, and all the hair and makeup lasted incredibly! We all had such a fun and chilled morning getting ready, and they all brought such an amazing calm vibe, and created such a special start to the day.
Aaron would also like to give a shout out to his barber Ollie at The Barber Co Radlett – his hair and beard looked fabulous too!

Dress
I got my dress from a gorgeous local boutique in St Albans, called What Alice Wore. It was the first place I went to try on dresses, I was so nervous but Amy made it such an amazing experience for me and the ladies I brought with me – my mum, my Grandma, Aaron’s mum, and my Auntie. I honestly had no clue what dress I wanted, I couldn’t really picture myself in anything! My dress was the third one I tried on – it had the most beautiful floral beading all over, and I absolutely loved all the texture and sparkles. I tried on a few dresses after, and just kept comparing them back to my dress, and that’s how I really knew it was the one! Just a few weeks ago, I was chatting to Amy from What Alice Wore on Instagram, and she mentioned that a bride had gone into the boutique with screenshot of me in my wedding dress, as she loved my look – it was the best compliment ever!!! I was so lucky to get my gown – it was a one-off ‘sample’ dress, and I can’t believe I got to wear it!
I really love a particular lyric of our first dance song ‘Tenerife Sea’ by Ed Sheeran – ‘All that you are is all that I’ll ever need’ – and I chose to get the lyric embroidered (by Gabrielle Elizabeth) onto my veil as an extra surprise for Aaron, which his mum, Lisa, gifted me, as we both have a love of embroidered veils. I felt like it was exactly the extra thing my bridal outfit needed, and I am SO happy with how it turned out, it was even better than I imagined! On the morning of our wedding day, Aaron gifted me a print of the whole lyrics of our first dance song – great minds think alike!
I had one extra thing as part of my bridal look – a gorgeous cardigan with ‘Mrs Conway’ embroidered on the back. It felt like a winter bride essential! It was the perfect thing to wear in some of our outdoor photos during the evening, and at the firepit.
It’s A Stitch, Gabrielle Elizabeth, Threads of Love all contributed to my bridal look.

Accessories
We are so lucky that Aaron’s dad in an amazing jeweller (Laurence Ian), and he brought all our visions to life, including the necklace and pocket watch we mentioned earlier, as well as our rings. Aaron designed a beautiful pair of pink diamond earrings as a gift for Ella (that she hadn’t seen until the morning of the wedding!), and it was so special for him to design these with his Dad. Laurence even put an ‘E’ for Ella on the pocket watch Aaron wore, as an extra surprise for Ella on the day!
I have been going to Katie Icklow for my nails since moving to our house two and a half years ago, and she helped me think of the perfect floral nails to complement my dress! She was amazing, we did a few nail trials and settled on a french base with stunning white flowers, and diamantes in the centre of the flowers. I absolutely loved them and they matched my dress absolutely perfectly!

Bridesmaids
We feel so lucky that our wedding party was made up of all people who are close friends to both of us – so we really felt it was one wedding party, rather than separate bridesmaids and groomsmen, which was so, so lovely!
The bridesmaids all wore stunning dark green satin dresses from JJ’s House. We chose the material and colour, but wanted each of them to feel comfortable in their dress, so they each chose the shape and style they wanted. The girls all looked absolutely beautiful!
The groomsmen each had a bow tie and a pocket square from Azazie, in a very very similar dark green satin to the bridesmaids, so everyone looked very coordinated, and our green vision came to life! They each had matching green socks too, as did our Dads!
One of the other things we DIY-ed (with lots of help from one of Ella’s amazing Maids of Honour, Becca) was gifts for the wedding party. We made personalised pyjamas and slippers for the bridesmaids and our mums to get ready in, and made them little gifts such as personalised cups, fans, mirrors with a little message to each of them on the back, makeup bags and keyrings! We wanted to get them lots of little bits and pieces as a small way to show our gratitude for how incredible they all are.
For the boys, we got them personalised hip flasks filled up with toffee vodka… as well as a full bottle of toffee vodka each, decorated with stickers of things we associated with them. These were a hit… and were totally empty by the end of the night!!!
Planning our wedding was an amazing team effort from us and both our sets of parents, so we really wanted to thank them and make sure they knew how special they all were to both of us. We each wrote a card to each of our, and each other’s, parents, and got them all gifts for them to remember the day too. For our mums, Michaela (My Own Illustrator) drew incredible gifts – for Janine, a drawing of Janine’s mum Panni, Janine, and Ella on their wedding days, and, for Lisa, a drawing of Lisa and Laurence on their wedding day standing next us on our wedding day (Michaela very cleverly put together photos of my dress fittings and hair trial to draw this before the day!), with the dates that both couples became ‘Mr and Mrs Conway’. For Ella’s Dad, Mark, we got him cufflinks personalised with Ella’s handwriting, for him to wear on the day – and a mug that said “I survived my daughter’s wedding”! (This felt like an essential as Mark was the receiver of many stressed calls over our 18 months of wedding planning – and was a very calming influence through them all!). For Laurence, we got him an engraved ‘Father of the Groom’ whiskey glass, and some matching whiskey stones.

Ceremony & Chuppah
When we first started planning our ceremony, we knew we wanted to honour the family members that could not be with us, and we made sure we had a memento or part of the ceremony that directly involved them. We stood under Ella’s Grandpa Henry’s tallit, which was gifted to him by Ella’s Grandma Ann. Aaron wore Ella’s Grandpa Gyuri’s cufflinks; along with his Grandpa Alan’s pocket watch, which Aaron’s dad had added Alan’s magen david to, as well as one of his Grandma Shirley’s pearls, and we also used Grandpa Alan’s kiddush cup.
We were very lucky to have three of our Grandparents under the Chuppah with us, and both our rings included components gifted to us by them. The diamond in Ella’s engagement ring belonged to Aaron’s Bubba Rita’s mum. Ella’s wedding band is made from the gold of her Grandma Panni’s wedding band, and Aaron’s wedding band is made from the gold of his Zeida Denis’ wedding band.
It was also important for us to be addressed by people who mean a lot to us, and to have Aaron’s old teacher, and now colleague, Rabbi Andrew Davis, address us under the chuppah felt like a real full circle moment; and to have the ceremony conducted by Rabbi Sendy Dubrowsky, who has known Aaron since he was 11, felt really special too. Meeting Rabbi Andrew and Rabbi Sendy before the wedding to go through the day and to share with them why we loved each other were such incredible moments.
Choosing the right songs to walk down the aisle to wasn’t an easy choice, but our band were so accommodating with what they could offer, and their enthusiasm in learning new songs to make the aisle feel unique isn’t something we took for granted. Hearing the acoustic guitar and saxophone play Maheira to Elvis’s Can’t Help Falling In Love (Lisa’s favourite singer) as Aaron walked down first, with his mum and dad, was really special, and to then have Bo’i Kallah to a Taylor Swift mashup of Lover x Wildest Dreams for Ella, and her mum and dad, was incredible.

Ketubah
We knew how important the ketubah would be and wanted it to be a central part of the day and tell our story too. It had to be personalised and it had to be perfect! Our Ketubah was painted by the amazing Carmel (Carmel Designs) and we are absolutely obsessed with how it came out. Carmel was fantastic, and we started with a call to discuss ideas about how it would look, and our vision was in keeping with the rustic themes of the wedding. We loved the Tree of Life motif in some ketubahs, and wanted that as a starting point. We also wanted to reflect our love of animals, and to have a chanukiah to represent the 1st night of Chanukah. Carmel sent back her first draft sketches and they were breathtaking!
After many additions and editions, we had a ketubah that tied our day together and now sits in pride of place in our living room. As soon as the chuppah concluded, we had the ketubah framed and displayed in our reception for our guests to see; it was so important that the ketubah was more than just a legality, but represented the whole day. Carmel brought it to life better than we could have dreamt – she even included a little easter egg of two little cats, one white and one tuxedo with their tails intertwined sitting under the tree to represent us, and to include our little fur baby Cece!

Our music choice
Band or DJ was a big debate for a while in our household – until Chloe from Uptown gave us a solution on a silver platter, having DJ Live, where we could have a live band supported by a DJ, which would tick both boxes for us at the same time. The first thing we did after getting engaged was turn to the married couples within our friendship groups and interrogate them furiously for recommendations. One of our friends recommended The Twentysomethings, and the other friends in that group spoke so highly of them when reminiscing about the day – they were such a hit that they’ve since become the unofficial band for our whole group, with two other couples booking them since!
When we first met Daniel, he was so thorough in going through what we would need and the different options, and seeing them in action filled us with excitement! They had such varied songs on their setlist, it was hard to cut it down to make sure all the favourites would be included.
We liked the idea of having a few frequent sets of dancing, as opposed to Israeli Dancing at the start, and the rest all after dessert, and when we suggested this, the band were brilliant at helping us design different dance portions that would all stand out. We had a traditional Jewish dancing set to start, complete with chairs, parachutes and lots of time airborne! We then included a modern Israeli set with the classics by Omer Adam and Static, which was good to separate from the traditional opening. Our last ‘mini-set’ of dancing happened after dark, and we managed to slip out for some late night photos alone, but we came back to see the dancefloor absolutely packed – we loved seeing our guests having so much fun, and it was so reassuring that they weren’t just dancing for our sake! We managed to view some of this from the balcony overlooking the barn, and we got some great photos and videos from there too! After our speech, we went straight into our first dance, and then an hour or so of dancing, which was so much fun! The band were incredible and so talented – they kept the vibes going all night, there was so much ruach in the room, and a highlight moment for us was standing on the stage belting ‘Love Story’ with all our guests crowded around us!

Flowers
Aside from knowing we wanted entirely green and white, we didn’t have too much of a specific vision for our flowers, and this was one of the jobs that our mums definitely led on! We told the amazing Alina (Flowers by Alina) all about our rustic, wintery, and green themes, and when we went with our mums to see our sample a few months before the wedding, we were blown away! Alina had used a stunning mixture of flowers, floating fairy lights, and candles to bring our vision to life.

Photographer and videographer
Having permanent memories from the day was really important to us, and Ella was insistent that every angle was covered! We found both our photographer Claudine Hartzel and our Videographer Charli May via friends’ recommendations, but what really made us choose them was our initial meetings, where they both made us feel like King and Queen, we felt so listened to and they really understood the brief.
Part of Claudine’s packages and something that was a big incentive for us was a pre-wedding photoshoot, just the three of us. This was both an opportunity to get some brilliant springtime outdoor photos at Micklefield (who were more than happy for us to use their grounds and woodlands for this) as well as get us comfortable with Claudine too. Aaron is allergic to both sincerity, and having his photo taken, so finding a photographer that made him feel comfortable and at ease would be so important, especially as we knew how long the formal photos could take.
We absolutely love all the photos Claudine took on our wedding day – a gallery of over 1000 photos has been very hard to narrow down! She captured all the posed photos we asked for, and also absolutely smashed the candids – which was really important to us. Claudine really did capture every single moment, reaction, and smile, and we feel so lucky to have all these amazing photos forever.
Charli’s style is ‘documentary’, which we felt aligned perfectly with our rustic day. When we began our introductions we mentioned how we got engaged on the Whitstable beach, so it was such a crazy coincidence when Charli told us that she lives less than 5 minutes from our proposal spot!
On the day of the wedding, Charli had brought her drone along, and some of the opening shots of the venue and the atmosphere on the day were incredible to see. All Charli’s videos are perfect and we are loving watching them on repeat – Charli got them all to us less than 5 weeks after the wedding, and we have been obsessed ever since!
Aaron’s best man’s sister-in-law Faye (Your Day With Faye) is a fantastic social media influencer and content creator; who was launching a new business as a wedding content creator – she approached us to record additional content for us throughout the day, and the reels and videos she has put together are absolutely incredible! It was really important for us to have an ‘unplugged’ chuppah, where we knew our guests could see us directly, not through a phone screen – so to have Faye recording the chuppah meant we still got to see the ceremony the day after. We woke up the morning after our wedding to thousands of clips from Faye from all throughout the day, which we have loved looking through, and, within 24 hours, Faye had also put together incredible reels of different aspects of our day.
We are SO grateful to the amazing team of Claudine, Charli and Faye – we know we will treasure everything they captured forever.

Food and cake
Another recommendation from a friend came for Aaron’s most important bit of the day, the food. Jonathan from Jasmine Catering had so many fantastic ideas to keep the food on theme, and true to the spirit of the festival, it felt like there were enough canapes to last 8 days too! Along with Aaron’s essentials for any reception, (duck pancakes and mini fish and chip cones) we knew latkes would be a non-negotiable, and Jonathan’s idea of a full salt beef bar to complement this just elevated the whole reception to the next level. Along with our personalised signature cocktails, named after our special moments and places, we also had a hot apple cider – much needed for midwinter warmth!
Jonathan’s next idea is what blew us away; as we lit the Chanukiot and sang Maoz Tzur, savoury pulled beef doughnuts were being served for our starter, which went down a huge hit!
At our tasting, we were torn between Chocolate Fondant – Ella’s favourite dessert – and a lighter citron tart option. After a bit of back and forth on the pros and cons, Jasmine were able to offer up a mini version of each, along with a raspberry sorbet, which proved to be the perfect way to finish up the food for the evening…
Until one more surprise on the dancefloor – this time it was sweet doughnuts with a little pipette of vodka for that extra kick, and that last blast of sugar came in handy dancing away the last half an hour!
For our friends who stayed till the end, Jasmine also provided hot chocolate that we served by the firepit while toasting marshmallows and eating even more doughnuts, and of course some bagel platters too!

Extra Details
One of our traditions is collecting fridge magnets on holidays, so a photo-magnet company felt perfect! Dan from Hold That Pic worked with us to design a border that matched our theme, and we love going to people’s houses and getting to see amazing photos from our wedding day on their fridges!
One of the best finds from the ‘Wedding Inspo’ Instagram collection was our live illustrator Michaela (My Own Illustrator). Michaela drew beautiful, bespoke portraits of our friends and family, as another special memento for them all to take home. Michaela was the one secret we were hellbent on keeping from even our wedding party before the day came, and somehow we managed this!
We chose to do our wedding speech together – we wanted our love for each other to be known and spoken about, and Ella wanted to get up and say all the reasons she loves Aaron, and not only vice versa! We absolutely loved speaking together, getting to speak about each other, and also speak about each other’s families.
Involving our friends and family as much as we could was so important to us – all our wedding party had some kind of speaking role throughout the day, whether it was giving a speech, toast or leading the Sheva Brachot, Ella’s parents did their welcome speech together, and Aaron’s parents led the Chanukah lighting together. After Benching, which was led by Ella’s cousins, we had the seven traditional Hebrew blessings, each accompanied by English interpretations of the blessings. This meant our Grandparents, as well as other close family members, had an opportunity to speak, which was so special to us.
Something that was really important to us was having someone we love as the voice of the day. Our close friend Noa was our MC – and she was incredible! She completely brought our vision to life, and we are so happy we did this!
We honestly had the BEST day – we had so much fun, and everything felt so special and so perfect for us. We’re so grateful to all our family, wedding party, friends, and vendors, for giving us truly our dream day.
Advice to couples currently planning their wedding
Remember that it’s YOUR day – and don’t let other people try and influence your choices and how it ‘should’ be done, otherwise you’ll end up compromising on what you really want, and you don’t want the day to be filled with “what ifs” – YOGMO! You Only Get Married Once (hopefully!)
We sat down very early on with a big notebook and spent an afternoon writing, drawing and planning out all the things we wanted to include, so when it came to making decisions, we could go back to our notebook and make sure nothing was left out. We also made a shared reels collection “wedding inspo” on Instagram, and anything we liked we could add to it.
As one of our Rabbis put it “I hope this day is the worst day of your life together – because after tomorrow every day should be even better than the last”. We knew people that suffered from ‘wedding blues’ after they came back down to Earth, and it is so important to us that we enjoy our Married Era as much as we enjoyed each and every day of our Engaged Era! We set aside the 14th of each month as a wedding countdown date night, and we now do 14th of the month date night ‘count-ups’ too; this helped us remember why we were planning a wedding – not for the big party, but for the marriage.
