More often than not, when asked to imagine and describe wedding photography, people will refer to romantic photoshoot at sunset, or in a magical Norwegian forest.
But there is an up and coming alternative wedding photography style, one that appeals to couples who value an urban lifestyle — we’re talking about urban wedding photography.
What is urban photography?
While the focus of a photoshoot in a natural environment is the romance, the tenderness, and the fantasy of fairytales, urban wedding photography is all about using the day to day environment – the city – from a completely different perspective.
Different colors and textures of walls, light and shadow, movement, composition – these are all tools that we use to create an interesting (and beautiful) photoshoot. There are also different personal elements that can be integrated into the photoshoot: a specific color that excites you, the place you first met, or even just an amazing structure with architecture that takes your breath away and makes you want to look at it forever.
Urban photography, influenced by fashion and paparazzi styles, can be divided into two main categories: street photography and architectural photography. Street photography includes urban elements such as shops and buildings facades, cars, people passing by, and the day-to-day environment – the contrast between a bride and groom and typical daily life is always intriguing.

Architectural photography has a slightly different approach, one that we call “abstract”. It creates a new kind of wedding photography that blurs the lines of logic and familiarity, and creates a new reality using the graphic instruments the city provides. At the end of the day, when you look at these abstract photos, you won’t always recognize the place or even what it is that you’re looking at. But you will end up with images you can’t take your eyes off of.
What is so special about urban wedding photography?
Photographers are confronted with the challenge of creating their own unique style, a ‘fingerprint’ that will make their photographs immediately identifiable. The ability to integrate one’s own graphic vision results in a new and interesting photographic style, and more so, it widens the photographer’s toolkit — color, shape, texture, reflections, light and shades. The realm of creativity is virtually endless, and the passion for creation too.
