Natalie & Eli | Informal DIY Boho Jewish Wedding at House Plantation, Texas

17/07/2014 by Karen

RUSTIC-DIY-WEDDING
I think it took me exactly 3.6 seconds from the moment I first read Shaun Taylor‘s email, detailing Natalie and Eli’s wedding, to thinking oh yes, this has crashed through my submission barriers — I’ve got a killer Smashing The Glass wedding on my hands here!

I love that Natalie made her own dress and wore cowboy boots. I love that Natalie’s mum made her jewellery. I love that the couple flew out their photographer, Shaun Taylor all the way from Derby  to Texas because they loved his work so much. I love what Natalie says about working together with your fiancà© as a team in the planning stages. And I love that it rained and then rained some more, but far from letting the weather dampen their spirits, they embraced it and the results are even better than they imagined, as Natalie describes below.

You’ll also see the most exquisite henna tattoos covering Natalie’s arms. A traditional Yemenite henna party is a popular pre-wedding ritual for Sephardi Jews and you can see theirs in full swing over on Shaun’s blog. It just goes to show you can stamp your personality onto your wedding weekend and dig deep into your culture’s traditions too. The two are not mutually exclusive  and that’s exactly what this blog is all about.

Gena & Tony | Extraordinarily imaginative ‘color explosion’ Jewish wedding at the Sydney Polo Club, NSW, Australia

10/07/2014 by Karen

rainbow-wedding
Epic.

Get your sunglasses ready because todays wedding is a massive rainbow-hued color fest. Gena and her husband Tony had one of those weddings where there are so many details I love I hardly even know where to start.

There’s Gena’s pom pom crown, her crochet dress and her supersize bouquet filled with flowers of every possible hue, glitter, ribbons, and pom poms. Then we’ve got bridesmaids dressed in orange carrying big foil heart shaped balloons with tissue paper tassels instead of bouquets. There’s a super cute dog taking centre stage during the ceremony. And 1200 odd colored ribbons used to decorate the barn and chairs. The handmade resin crayons for buttonholes (a reference to the green crayon hair clip that Gena wore in her hair the night Tony first noticed her) are so cute!). And then there’s the way that Tony looks at Gena…

So have you got your sunglasses ready? Well get your Pinterest boards primed too because you are most certainly going to need them! All of these delectable images were taken by the rather brilliant Lara Hotz. (Oh and check out the mighty cute wedding film at the end of the post by The White Tree too!).

A RUSTIC VENUE
Our wedding was on a farm at the Sydney Polo Club, about an hour away from where we live. We wanted to have something a bit out of the ordinary (this can be hard with a big Jewish wedding but we knew we didn’t want a hotel reception room) and not expect people to have to travel too far. We ended up having the chuppah and dance floor inside the barn and connected a marquee to the side where the guests were seated. The barn doors slid open to connect the two spaces.

Dana & Stuart | Autumn city rustic Jewish wedding at the spectacular Angel Orensanz Foundation, Lower East Side, New York City

19/06/2014 by Karen

Autumn city rustic Jewish wedding at the spectacular Angel Orensanz Foundation, Lower East Side, New York City
Dana and Stuart’s wedding has Autumn completely wrapped up. Long farm tables with flowers and candles, orange and cream colours with pops of russet inspired by Dana’s amazing auburn hair, and a total sense of joy, warmth and tenderness thoughout.

Our bride is so very elegant but at the same time clearly having the time of her life… That smile – it’s so infectious! And what’s one of my favourite moments? When Dana swaps her jewelled Manolo Blahniks for white low top Converse when the former falls off during the Hora – so down to earth! I also love the little creative details like classic movies of their favourite Hollywood icons playing in the background during the cocktail hour.

Oh… and have you ever heard of ‘Dudesmaids’?! Dana had two – see them posing with the girls above?!

All the fantastic photography is by the one and only Karen Wise.

Michal & Samuel | Intimate Israeli-Swiss Wedding at Kibbutz Ein Gev, Sea of Galilee, Israel, with the bride and groom in flip flops!

29/04/2014 by Karen

Israeli-Swiss Wedding at Kibbutz Ein Gev, Sea of Galilee, Israel 23
Michal and  Samuel met whilst traveling across  South America and dated long distance for some time,  flying back and forth between Switzerland (where Samuel is from) and Israel, until they decided to make a life  together  in Tel Aviv.

For their wedding they  wanted everyone to have an amazing, relaxed time and didn’t want anything too formal or stuffy. Their focus from the start was on food, drink and intimacy  and they  held their wedding where Michal grew up, and her parents still live, in a kibbutz in the north of Israel called Ein Gev  on the shores of the Sea of Galilee (or Lake Kinneret as it’s known in Israel).

It’s an amazing  kibbutz all about family and togetherness, with a  communal, peaceful and  natural atmosphere. This is the exact ambience that they wanted  for  their wedding, and is very much in the spirit of who they are. Michal in her own words even “went for the most untypical bride shoes – flip flops. April on the beach… who needs anything more?!”

Samuel’s close family and friends flew in  from Switzerland, and  with the couple wanting  to bring a mixture of Israeli  and  Swiss culture to their wedding, Samuel’s family brought over Swiss wine, cheese and  meats for the party  (all spread out and packed in their suitcases)! They also had what I personally think is a  genius idea of an ice cream bar for dessert.

It’s a beautiful authentic wedding with the chuppah  taking place  just after sunset. Michal,  the Bride, is here to tell you all about it, along with images from the fabulous  Newman Photography.

FIRST MEETING
Jazmine, the Bride: Edan and I met in January 2010 at Bally Total Fitness in Pleasant Hill. He had been working there as a trainer ever since he had graduated, and I started working out with a trainer just a couple of months later. To say that we were struck by one another would certainly be an understatement!

VENUE
Our wedding was nestled up on the hillside in the city of Morgan Hill, California at a beautiful, newly renovated mansion, overlooked the rolling hills and vineyard below, with beautiful grounds and an elegant, classy yet vintage style.
