Planning During COVID-19

Planning a wedding is known to be one of the most stressful times for a couple besides having a child or buying a home. This becomes even more stressful when you add a global pandemic that leaves one of you unemployed and unable to work for at least 3 months. My heart does go out to all the brides who have had to postpone their wedding, booking new vendors for your wedding in 2021 is not easy either.

We are getting quotes from caterers and supposed to put a deposit down without ever trying their food. Florists deal with technical difficulties for meetings where it’s hard to pull out your Pinterest to show them what you are thinking. Danny and I are big believers in hiring vendors who we can relate to. Thankfully for us we were able to attend some bridal shows in January and met some people from each of the vendors we are looking at. The real event caused by COVID-19 that sent me on a crazy breakdown was having to postpone saying yes to my wedding dress.

Real Jewish Brides: Erin on looking beyond ourselves

03/06/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Erin will be marrying Josh on 1st November 2020 at Congregation Beth Israel, in Charlottesville, VA, USA. Click here to read all Erin’ planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: (1) Erin and Josh are planning an outdoorsy fall wedding on a budget in Virginia’s Shenandoah mountains. (2) Erin recently completed her conversion to Judaism, and she and Josh are looking forward to filling their big day with Jewish traditions while keeping it enjoyable and understandable to friends and family from all backgrounds. (3) Erin is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

Sometimes as a bride, it can be really easy to become laser-focused on your wedding. Sure, you usually are still working, still maintain friendships and our relationships, but a bride (myself very much included.)

But right now, it seems like the world is conspiring to ask us to look beyond ourselves. Beyond our weddings.

There’s a pandemic that has all but stopped our cities. A pandemic that has left people away from their loved ones for months, without jobs, sick, and sometimes even dead.

In the United States, where I live, people are seizing the moment and protesting systemic racism and police brutality. Taking to the streets, even in the midst of a pandemic, because once again we feel like we have had enough.

So where does a wedding fit into all of this? Honestly, I think this is a question my fiancé and I are still fully sorting out.

Real Jewish Brides: Orli On Yoga and Brides Club Quarantine Camp

27/05/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Orli will be marrying Ben on 6th September 2020 at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, UK. Click here to read all Orli’s planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: (1) Orli and Ben met on Jswipe. (2) Although their venue, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, couldn’t be more quintessentially London, Orli and Ben are going for a countryside feel. (3) Orli is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

It’s crazy to think that my last blog was in the middle of March just before lockdown began. Going into lockdown, I realised how much time I was saving everyday by not commuting that I started thinking of new ways to fill my time. Whether it was a banana bread recipe, a new live fitness class or reading deeper into the yoga philosophy and drafting new routines.

I realised that it was likely that a lot of us in Smashing The Glass’ Brides Club had some extra time on our hands, so came up with the initial idea to reach out to the Karen for me to start running some yoga classes. Karen couldn’t have been more supportive and was so excited by my idea of asking different members of Brides Club to run all different sessions.

Real Jewish Brides: Introducing Jenna + Mat: How They Met To The Present Day…

12/05/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Today on the blog we’re introducing our latest gorgeous crop of 2020 / 2021 Real Jewish Brides! Please give a warm welcome to Jenna, who will be marrying Mat on 6th September 2020 at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tucson, Arizona.

THREE FACTS: (1) Jenna + Mat have known each other all their lives (2) Their relationship began at the University of Arizona in March 2012 (3) Mat proposed at Jenna’s parents house in December 2018

How We Met

When people ask me what my first impression of my fiancé was, I like to say, “I think he needs a diaper change.”  You see, we have a love story you don’t hear every day.  The year was 1994, we were both one-year-olds, and we were at a local park in Tucson, Arizona at a baby tumbling class.  Our moms connected, and they brought us to the same playgroup until we started school. While we never went to the same school growing up, we both belonged to the same synagogue, and we were even in the same B’nai Mitzvah class together – my Bat Mitzvah was on Mat’s 13th birthday!

We lost touch for the next few years until we both happened to be at a mutual friend’s high school graduation party. Mat was about to start his freshman year at the University of Arizona and I was about to start my sophomore year.  They got to talking, and it turned out that Mat was joining the same business mentorship program Jenna had done her freshman year. Mat and his best friend happened to attend the orientation session that following week, and he serendipitously received a book for the business mentorship program that I had read and signed! I was one of 60 students in the program the year before, and of all the incoming freshmen that could have received my book…Mat was the lucky recipient.

Come the beginning of the school year, I was helping our Chabad at the U of A table on the mall (center grass strip of campus), and I may have enticed Mat to come for free food…and my company (which Mat couldn’t turn down).  Over the course of the next few months, our friendship began to blossom.  FINALLY, Mat asked me to be his girlfriend in March of 2012, and we have been dating ever since.  Our relationship has withstood two and a half years of long distance while I attended graduate school at Brandeis and my subsequent move to New York City.  Six months after I moved to NYC, Mat followed.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

Real Jewish Brides: Jos on Support for Wedding Vendors

05/05/2020 by Smashing The Glass

Jos will be marrying Daniel on 1st November 2020 at Hackney Town Hall, London, UK. Click here to read all Jos’ planning posts to date.

THREE FACTS: (1) Before meeting Daniel, Jos was known for her torrid dating tales – so much so that her friends used to call her Bridget Jonestein! (2) Daniel proposed to Jos in the Greek island of Naxos! (3) Jos is a member of Smashing The Glass’s Brides Club!

Let’s hear it for our vendors

Like for many other people, the last few weeks have been a devastating whirlwind for me and my family. We have watched, horrified, as this horrible situation has escalated out of control, threatening the lives of our loved ones, our financial stability and, sadly, rendered us unsure of whether our weddings will go ahead on the dates we’d planned them for.

Two weeks ago, we quickly hustled and put in place a contingency date for our wedding, thanks to the advice of Karen during a Live in the Brides Club! We were lucky that we were able to align all of our amazing suppliers to move our wedding to November, if the situation didn’t look like it was going to clear up and they all agreed. Speaking honestly, I found this process extremely difficult.
