Chuppah ideas & styling for a modern Jewish wedding

Styling your own chuppah can be a fantastic way to stamp your personality on your day, and is also a great way of figuring out what it is you want your day to look like. As the basic structure is set, how you dress it can really start opening up what you want your personal style to be.

rustic chic

Faux flowers and foliage can often evoke a shudder of fear among many, but the industry has come on leaps and bounds in recent years with faux flora often giving the real thing a run for its money. And in terms of value and peace of mind, artificial foliage and flowers will obviously last as long as you need and you can repurpose them in your home or garden later. Wrapping thick and luscious strands of foliage round the supporting poles can create a beautiful focal point and creating an asymmetrical look by concentrating the foliage on one side only, can really help modernise the look. You can then use the same flowers as styling throughout the day in bouquets, button holes and centre pieces really helping to create a strong coherent look.

keepsake elements

The rustic look lends itself beautifully to the elegance of the chuppah. Using tree branches for poles, you can create a beautiful lasting keepsake by carving your initials and the date on one of the poles and displaying this as art in your home for years to come.

Niki & Will | Super-fun + frolicsome Jewish Wedding at Santa Margarita Ranch, California

21/04/2014 by Karen

California-Barn-Wedding
Ok lovely people, we are starting the week at TRULY EPIC on the wedding spectrum. So get ready. ..

The bride and groom are both into comedy (Niki is a writer for The Office and Will is an actor) so they ramped up the fun factor to the extreme. In fact their wedding slogan was ‘Have fun. Get Messy’ and their monogram was two back to back guns that together formed a heart. ADORE! The couple made up personalised plastic bibs for their guests incorporating the Have fun. Get Messy logo too! How can you not have a ball at a wedding where bibs get handed out for goodness sake?!

The venue, Santa Margarita Ranch, is beyond incredible, and watch out for the couple’s chuppah too. I guarantee it’s one of the most unusual you will EVER catch sight of. Let’s just say that it’s essentially made up of shabby-chic-esque screen doors adorned with multi-coloured paper spiral flowers, and what’s more, a reading from Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance was one of the readings recited under it!

OK enough of me, right? Let’s hand over to our fabulous (and utterly gorgeous) bride, Niki, for the story of her and Will’s W-Day, and feast your eyes on onelove’s photographic delights..

AN INSANE PARTY
Niki, the Bride: The one thing we wanted to make sure we had was a fun freakin’ party! We didn’t want the vibe to be stuffy or serious, so we tried to let that be known from the get-go with our jokey save-the-dates. Will and I are both into comedy, so we wanted there to be some silly aspects to both the ceremony and the reception. And the after-party. And the hotel lobby.Continue ReadingContinue Reading

Smashing Pins: Beautiful chuppah ideas

14/10/2013 by Karen

Pinterest LogoThis is the first in the series of Smashing Pins, where I’ll be choosing one of the Smashing The Glass pinterest boards to share with you. Pinterest is your best friend when it comes to planning your wedding as it’s not only useful for collating inspiring ideas and images, but your boards will also help give guidance to your suppliers.

Today I am looking at some really beautiful ‘chuppahs’ or ‘chuppot’ (for the uninitiated that’s the  canopy under which a Jewish couple stand during their wedding ceremony).  There never seems to be enough inspiring ideas for the all-important chuppah design and one of my most popular boards is definitely the chuppah ideas board. Here I’ve picked 25 out of the 67 pins currently on the board, from the beautifully simple to the outrageously lavish.

You can see the entire Chuppah  pinterest board here, and follow all Smashing The Glass’s boards here. Happy pinning!

1. Keep everything else simple and create the colour in your chuppah for a real ‘wow’ effect.

2. For an interfaith wedding, combine cultures like this chuppah made from sari material for a Jewish Hindu interfaith Wedding.

3. Get inspiration from your ketubah design and pick out creative elements for your chuppah.
