Win £100 to spend on bridal lingerie with Rose Fulbright, plus a 30% discount for every reader

09/07/2014 by Karen

Rose Fulbright lingerie_0010
A few weeks ago Mr STG arrived  home and told me that he’d stopped by a very cool pop up shop called ‘WISE Creative’ in Marylebone, packed full of  quality, independent British brands.  He had been served by a lovely woman called  Rose, who is co-founder of WISE, and the owner of the  super-chic  luxury lingerie label, Rose Fulbright.

My always-entrepreneurial hubby  immediately spotted that my readers would love Rose’s exquisite  silhouette  designs and told me that it might  be an idea to  contact her about a collaboration. Well I know that wives aren’t known for saying this about their husbands, but he was absolutely right! I’m completely taken with Rose’s gorgeous  designs, seaming and finish, and I know that you will be too.

Her lingerie oozes femininity, and what’s more I love the fact that you can personalise the garments for your special day with a bespoke monogramming service. I very much wanted to incorporate my new initials into my wedding day and I did so by putting  a necklace on after the ceremony, made up of my  new initials, but I have to admit that  monogramming my lingerie would have been even sexier!

Interview Samantha Birch

Samantha, your book is a hugely entertaining and informative read, but what are your stand-out tips for brides?

Samantha BirchDon’t let people pile on the pressure. There are a lot of ‘should’s that get thrown around when you’re planning a wedding, but it’s yours and your nearly-hubby’s day, no-one else’s. I’m not saying you shouldn’t take other people’s feelings into account–thinking of your guests’ little nuances will make sure everyone feels special and has a great day–but there’s a difference between making a tier of the wedding cake fruit to keep the nans happy and ending up walking into a retake of your parents’ wedding.

Things have changed since they got married: there are a lot more choices of venue, for starters; bridesmaids can wear black; you don’t even have to have flowers in your bouquet (brooches, anyone?)! So if people are telling you you have to have chair covers but you like the chairs as they are, or someone says it’s the ‘done’ thing to have a stylist do your hair on the day but you wanted it the way you always wear it, it’s okay to go with your gut. Gently explain to them that you appreciate their expertise, but what you loved about their wedding day was that it was so them, and you and your other half want to follow in their footsteps by making yours so you.

As for the wedding dress, I would say don’t be afraid of colour. You’ll have so many more options for where to get a gorgeous gown that doesn’t empty your overdraft if you’re not afraid of a bit of pastel pink, for instance, or even all-out bold, vibrant shades. They’ve been on the catwalks of big bridal designers like Vera Wang in the last few years, and they work. Look at Rachel McAdams in About Time: she rocked that bright red dress!

What inspired you to write the book?
Planning my wedding! And one super-keen friend who I was helping with hers. One day she pinged me over a picture of a wedding dress she loved, but couldn’t find the designer for, and I knew I recognised it; I sent her back a name straight away. That’s when she suggested I should write a wedding book, and I knew what it was going to be about almost immediately: my now-husband (hooray!) and I were struggling to save up for our big day, and I knew we couldn’t be the only ones. I had all these ways of saving money that I realised weren’t really getting written about, and suddenly it all made sense!

Win a stunning Mary Jane Vaughan Bouquet worth up to £125 and tickets to Brides the Show

14/02/2014 by Sharon

Mary Jane Vaughan Competiton

As the newest member of the STG team, I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to try and ingratiate myself with you all, by giving you a chance to win an absolutely fabulous bouquet from top London florist,  Mary Jane Vaughan Designs (worth £125) and a pair of tickets, worth £40, to the best wedding show out there – Condà©  Nast’s Brides the Show  on March 22nd & 23rd 2014.

But I must admit to a tinge of sadness. You see there are two things that make me slightly wince about my own London winter wedding in 2010 – the flowers and the absence, at the time, of a really elegant, hands-on wedding show to give me proper inspiration and ideas. I’d love to take two and do it all over again (with the same man, I promise!)

Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved every minute of my snowy wedding – the ceremony in Marylebone and the Thames-side reception – but I’ve always regretted scrimping on the flowers. And in the hurry to get my husband down the aisle, the 5 month preparation time I had, didn’t give me the opportunity to shop about as I would now. The Condà©  Nast Brides the Show didn’t exist then alas as it would have been perfect!
